Yeah, like Mr. Blue said... If you put something like a board, or a metal pan on top of the heat mat, you can redistribute the heat over a larger area without necesarily increasing the heat source.

Not to mention being covered in spikes that tend to snag on the way out... soft or not that has to be difficult.
