    Ocellata breeding

My female was mated... I think. I put them together twice for 24 hours and both times he spent the whole night on her back. She has now laid 5 ooths, and is probably going to lay more. How do I know if they are infertile, and how long do they take to hatch if they are fertile.

Funky predatory true bug (assassin maybe?) with mantis-like front legs?

The "this thread is worthless" smiley was just a lighthearted joke...................... notice all the smilies are smiling ;) If you really just must have an answer based on your description alone, then I would bet it is one of these: If you want to know more about what that is go here...

 No seriously... the only way to even try to make an accurate I.D. is with an actual photo of the specimen.

    Adventures in Wild Collecting

Every time I have found them in the wild it was when I wasnt looking for them. The last time was in may when we found a L-1 nymph on my sister's shoulder. I caught it and a moment later it jumped off my hand and literally disappeared into the wind.

Which mantid in SE Asia is totally brown with bright yellow eyes

Based on post 5 im not sure if post 6 is a shot of the mantis in question or what calvin thinks it kinda looks like... and we all know there are so many tiny details that only some of the experts on this board can distinguish that even if we determine the sp. of the mantis in Calvin's photo, we...

How do you measure humidity in a 32oz cup?

I pour water through the screen lid onto the silk flowers below and it ends up on the paper. They then drink from either the screen or the flowers, but usually they get plenty of water from their food. Occasiionally the P.O. female will attack the water as I pour it and then drink what she...

heating multiple mantids living in deli cups

Yeah, like Mr. Blue said... If you put something like a board, or a metal pan on top of the heat mat, you can redistribute the heat over a larger area without necesarily increasing the heat source.

Not to mention being covered in spikes that tend to snag on the way out... soft or not that has to be difficult.

    keeping houseflys

I have wanted to start a house fly culture for quite some time, and kinda fell into it when I finally did. I'll document my process the next time around. As for transfering them refrigeration is the best way. Some people put them in the freezer for a few minutes, but forget about them and they...

    keeping houseflys

No, actually I moved the whole thing out under the grape arbor about 500 feet from the house. And the nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away. I was the only one who had to smell them, and I know better than to complain, as nobody would listen anyway lol. As far as gutloading goes, honey works well...

    Fat Mantis

I think that in order to correctly assess the situation we should know whether or not Libertine is planning to mate the mantis in question. Then Rob's assessment would be correct, but if the mantis is to remain a maiden her entire life, then I assume the mantis is being kept as a pet rather than...

    keeping houseflys

Actually they will propagate in allot of rotten stuff, not just flesh. Recently I started a fly culture myself. It started with a pot of lentil soup that was left out on the stove for a few days and became rancid. When my wife went to clean it she screamed and I had to deal with a writhing pot...
