Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

[01.06.15] I saw a worm in one of the pots containing the eggs so I tipped the substrate out and saw that two eggs have already hatched. The one in the first 2 photos hatched recently while the one in the 1st photo must have hatched sometime in the last 3 days as it's head capsule already has...

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

[14.05.15] The male lost his thoracic horn from a nasty fall after flying into a bookshelf. Poor thing. :'(

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

[04.05.15] A short video recording the male stridulating. They do this by rubbing the elytra on a roughened patch on the propygidium (Jarman 1974). IMG_3262 by Richard Nakamura, on Flickr

Cross breeding? Reopened with new ideas?

I will copy and paste my reply on facebook to somebody who asked if cross-breeding was possible: "Yes, cross breeding is possible within some species of the same genus. Even when it is successful, the resulting offspring will most often be sterile like the Ligers and Zonkeys, LUCKILY. (more...

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

Hi, I haven't been posting updates on any of my invertebrate threads on any of the forums I post in due to exams. It will be over in 3 weeks time so I still won't be posting until then. To answer your question, the female became active 3 weeks ago and she has already laid 27 eggs. :) I will...

    Mantis, PROHIERODULA sp.

Sticky, I can't get photos now but I took a video of them. I embeded the video in the above post. :)

    Mantis, PROHIERODULA sp.

[25.04.15] The male moulted to adult... oh wow. [26.04.15] The female moulted to adult as well... oh wow. :P A video of the pair:

    Mantis, PROHIERODULA sp.

We all thought they looked like P. laticollis from the start lol, Andrew. We were just sensible enough to not give them a definite ID until they were adults to make sure no misidentified mantids went into circulation. I am almost certain that these are P. laticollis now. The male moulted to...

    Mantis, PROHIERODULA sp.

No, that's not the official name of this stock and they have been confirmed by a member on the UK Mantisforums that all the markings matches ones of a P. laticollis. The only reason why I'm calling them Prohierodula cf. laticollis "Togo" is because none of the males or females of this species...

    Mantis, PROHIERODULA sp.

Thanks. Yes, that is blue that you are seeing. The blue eyes contrast the rest of the body which is more of a green/turquoise colour under bright light. Coupled with the faint pink 'lipstick', this species is one of my favourites! :)

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

I understand where the confusion lies now! All Lucanidae, Dynastinae and Cetoniinae (if not, almost all of them) experience in their life cycle after eclosing is a period of inactivity ranging from a couple of days to a couple of months depending on the species. During this period, they will...

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

Cheers mate. Actually, it doesn't mean that they will live longer as the period of inactivity is a crucial stage of any large Cetonid or Dynastid and they will go through it, no matter what. Therefore, it's pretty much impossible for them to 'live longer' than one that doesn't go through it...

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

Bill, that's what I said in the opening post if you re-read it carefully. You probably mis-understood it as the period of resting after eclosing into an imago is called the period of inactivity here in the UK and not hibernation. ;) "The pair still seem to be INACTIVE as neither of them were...

Hercules Beetle, DYNASTES HERCULES ssp. HERCULES

[09.04.15] I was waiting for the thumbnail to change to what I set it to in these links here but it's still taking ages so I will post them anyway. :( Here's the unboxing video:
