    Controlling the mantids colour?

if it did, it probably wouldnt be (just) because it was somewhere with higher humidity.

    Controlling the mantids colour?

firstly, this has been discussed more times than i can remember, please use the search function. i agree with rick. whatever the factors affect the colour of mantids, i dont think we fully know what they are, let alone how to control them all, let alone which combinations of which factors will...

Idolo Nymphs L2 now .. anyone at L3 yet ?

anyone out there with subs kept together that wants to seperate them for the final moult, look out for this outline around the mantids' lobes/pronotum: ive noticed this start to happen a week or so before moulting to adult.. also obviously the wing buds swell up like with any other mantis...

just thought i'd post a few new photos here, hope you dont mind, i didn't think it was worth starting a whole new thread.

    Yet more I diabolica photos

sometimes mantids catch in one smooth motion, but sometimes they pause in the middle (as the prey is pinned to the ground, before hoisting it up into the air), which allows you to get a photo like that.

    - Please ID the latin name.

"I view wikipedia like a dictionary". i think you are in the minority. the vast majority of people see wikipedia less like a dictionary to look up definitons, more like an encyclopaedia of information to learn from. this can be a problem, as alot of the time things on wiki are read and quoted...

How come I cant find any mantids?!?

this is like "wheres wally?"! i see it in the bottom right quarter of the photo. i assume some kind of mantis but have no idea on species. the abdomen is slightly curled round like the tail on some dogs, front arms/legs outstrectehd like popa/acromantis/sybilla/others. what species is it?

    Ocellata breeding

at average temps of around 30C, around 30-35 days. i have never experienced what jplelito said about oothecae being infertile "about half the time or more" with this or any other species. there is no way to tell with this species that i know of, the only surefire way is when the first one laid...

    Ocellata breeding

if she keeps trying to snatch a male maybe she is not well fed enough? just an idea. here are a few links you may find useful: http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=9023 http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=10247 http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=9973...

Just a molting question (P. paradoxa)

how often do you feed them? you may not have noticed them stop eating before the moult, it is usually only for a couple of days. however, some people have also noticed mantids eating right up until mere hours before moulting. so sometimes there are exceptions. the hanging and shaking are not...

Is there a good way to sex ghost mantid nymphs?

both those methods work as nymphs too.

When should I start mating P. Wahlbergii

when i have bred this species in the past, i mated them two weeks after the females moulted to adult. im not sure if this can be done any sooner. as above, many would reccommend waiting longer to be safe (4 weeks or so).

    problems shedding

moults shouldnt take longer than about ten or fifteen minutes. much onger than this means the mantis is having difficulties and will probaby not make it out fine. there is nothing you can do to help it ,aside from euthanasia i guess, as the mantis will probably eventualy die in the position it...

    Mantid identification and ooth clarification

in some species you can tell if it may be fertile but i dont think with this one, sorry. if she is wild caught there may be a good chance she mated before being caught. twice a week misting sounds fine. positioning looks ok (if a little close to the floor) , every time i have had a mantis lay an...

    Ghost Mantis Shedding

its not true. some sites have some ******** about "this mantis is quite intricate and so can get stuck in its old skin easily" but its simply not true. i would say people have far more problems with mismoults with species like tenodera, which are not especially intricate and are considered...

    Tropidomantis ooth

this would work for most ooths but with tropidomantis ones theres not much to work with if you know what i mean.

    Tropidomantis ooth

you can stick it to stuff using hot glue, but i like to make sure to wait a few seconds for the glue to cool down before touching it onto the ootheca. i think thats the best way, sometimes people thread some string through and tie them up but this species' ootheca is a bit too small for that. so...
