Is This a Real Photo of a Mantis?

This is easily avoidable in captivity by just regulating how much you would feed them. A mantis (instinctively) will eat whatever it can, especially adult females. Sometimes they will gorge themselves to the point where that happens, and then ending up gravid only worsens the situation.

    Larger Enclosures

Recently, I've been struggling with finding appropriate sized enclosures that are larger and can comfortably house some of my larger species. Currently, I've  been playing around with pretzel/ cheese puff jars that work well, but are just way too big. I currently have an IKEA bookshelf and an...

I Figured this Would Happen With my Package... HELP!

Haven't sent any mantids but sent out a few other animals, everything seems good so far. There will be delays all the time-corona or no corona.

Do I need sticks in My Giant Asian Shield Mantis’s Cage

I don't really know if that works since there are microbes that live in below freezing temps without issue. Brushing with an old clean toothbrush under hot water from the tap can work too, and I really haven't encountered issues with that either.  Just make sure wherever you get your twigs...

Do I need sticks in My Giant Asian Shield Mantis’s Cage

I highly recommend using sticks that are about as thick as the abdomen of the mantis, I use them in all my enclosures, and I have never had a mismolt. I often see smaller species like ghosts, flowers, etc spending their time on sticks. If you do decide to use them, make sure there is adequate...

What Happened to Yen Saw’s Website?

I've been buying from DeShawn George and Patricia recently, been waiting for DeShawn to post some new species I'm waitlisted for. Gonna check out what yen saw has available though, hopefully I can find what I'm looking for!

    RDS: Random Death Syndrome

Adding onto the genetics topic:  Natural selection plays a big role in these animals' lives, they lay ooths with so many nymphs because the majority die for one reason or another. Even in captivity, we can remove external threats but genetics are always something that will be a dice roll for...

    Dedicated Caresheets? (Brainstorming)

Just a suggestion, though not sure if it's possible for the admins to do- making the care sheets alphabetized would help find people find what they're looking for a bit faster, instead of having the topics organized by date of creation. Just a little suggestion!

    What are Your Favorite Mantises?

The only acceptable answer is all of them 😁 I myself do like acanthops and psuedacanthops a LOT though. Verrry interesting morphology.

Is Yen Saw the Indisputable Best Mantis Keeper in the USA Overall?

I've never personally talked with him, though I used to and still hear a lot about him and his techniques. Even though I've never actually read or talked to him, I'm sure some of the information I learned over the years trickled down from what he said!

My Guide for Relaxing/Spreading/Pinning Mantid Specimens

Ha! It's good to see a post my brother made was so valuable to all of you! I remember the insect collections I made myself, I ended up passing them onto my AP Bio teacher in HS. Hopefully I can also add something as valuable to the forum myself!

    Stacking 32oz specimen cups

I've kept mantids like this for a while and I never have any issue, at most the ones on the bottom stay a bit more humid for some time. If you are concerned, as stated above adding extra ventilation is an easy solution!

    Controversial idea

I agree as well. Personally I don't really get why people would keep mantises as just pets since they live such short lives and breeding is relatively easy. Though I can understand not wanting to deal with 20-150 nymphs 😂! I also do have a biased though since I always bred anytime I kept.
