    Heat vs. Sunlight

Oh that's cool, never thought about that. Now question, I have a finnex planted 24/7 so I can manipulate blues, reds, greens, and whites so do you think there is a specific color that would help more?

    Another female

Yes she is and I'm not sure about Carolinas. If there temperament is anything like the Chinese mantis I would say a swift no, but I'm not certain! ICongrats on another find! Completely different color as well! :)  would wait for someone to answer that question about whether they are communal!

    Heat vs. Sunlight

Just curious on your opinions about this. I read that mantids are cold blooded so they need the sunlight in order to warm them up and get their metabolism going, but the same can be accomplished with just a heater don't ya think? I have a radiator that will crank out heat and I keep my mantids...

    She is very greedy LOL

Cool video! It's one thing to watch them catch an insect but when they catch an additional one, it blows my mind sometimes. What type of mantis is that btw? I have an idea, but not sure. Thanks!

    Carolina...with unusual coloration

That is a very cool Carolina mantis!! I've read that Carolina mantids can have crazy patterns so that cool that you found one that was different!  I also love looking at old pictures of my mantis! Makes me feel good! :)

    Noob Question

That looks great! No need for dirt, a paper towel will work nicely for substrate. Will keep moisture in and she can drink off of it if she wants. Put some sticks in and maybe a clipping of a shrub that will give some green for a while. I like to make the enclosure as natural as possible, but...

    Noob Question

That's awesome that you have gotten to study her and you'll learn a lot more after bringing her in! You don't have to worry about her biting you! I would just put your hand in front of her and see if she will climb up on you. If that doesn't work, then I would slowly move your hand under her...

    Favorite mantids

Since I've only kept Chinese mantids and as of very recent, orchid mantids, I am going to have to pick the Chinese mantis. I love how each time I raise them, I learn something new, or see a behavior that I've never seen before. They truly have personalities and they are a very interesting...

    Orchid Question

So I've never raised mantids that come from outside of the US so a quick question.  Is molting different in terms of prep time before they actually molt.  I know with an L2 Chinese nymph, it can stop eating in the morning and have a molt as early as later that evening you or take up to a day...

This camouflage is almost unfair lol

Some mantids see it almost as a sport when it comes to hunting!  I love watching them and different species have different strategies which makes it more interesting. Cool setup and she practically disappears in the enclosure!  Cool!

    A whole new world!

So I received 2 orchid mantids in the mail yesterday from precarious and I am blown away already by their behavior.  I've raised Chinese mantids exclusively since the 9th grade and now I'm 24(14-24), so it's safe to say I am in need of a little change.  I've always wanted to branch out and try...

    Repeated Topic, different perspective: COLOR

This topic has started so many discussions and I'm sure many arguments.  I myself have always wonder what determines the color of a mantis.  I broke it down to genetics and Darwinism. Genetics will determine the color, Darwinism if you're the right color in a specific area, you'll survive, if...

Hangs All The Time (Female Chinese Mantis)

No need to worry! Mantis hang like that all the time and especially in enclosures.  I had a ten gallon that I decorated so nicely with sticks and shrubs and my mantis would choose to be on the top of the cage as her favorite spot.  Mantids like to find where the heat source is and hang out...

    Looking to buy Mantis

The names Stephen I live in the states New York.  Looking for either a Chinese mantis, Dead leaf, or Ghost.  Preference is Chinese but something new could be cool as well.  Message me if anyone has those available.  Thanks!  I am a seasoned mantis rearer.

    Tenodera Sinensis "playing dead"?

That is one of their defense mechanisms. If they did that on the ground with sticks, grass, and dead leaves I'm almost certain you wouldn't find it. Lol.  When Chinese mantids are about L5 and younger they tend to be very skittish and startle quite easily. The next level of that defense...

    Adult Male Chinese mantis wanted

Figured I'd ask again. I have three females waiting to mate. They call every night. Kind of like a sad tale. If anyone has or knows someone who has an adult male, let me know. Thanks!

Looking for Adult Male Chinese mantids

Hey everyone, I have three adult females that I'm looking to breed. I have a male but I want to change the gene pool, so I will not be mating him with any of them. I'm looking to buy a couple males so I can breed them. The more color on the males the better. If you have mantids, message me...

    Curious Question

We know how females will bring in males when they are ready to breed, but do you think other females will follow a pheromone trail in hopes to confront (eat) another calling female? I'm going to have 4 adult females soon and I want to be able to put them on house plants, but am curious that...

Just when you think you've seen it all

I've been raising Chinese mantids for a long time and I've seen a lot of interesting things involving them. So as some of you may know, my female mantis Azura laid an egg case on an indoor plant late August and during a two week period of really cold weather, the heat was on full swing and the...

    Bigger Containers?

So I have about 10 of the 32oz critter containers for my L2 mantids. The thing is they're Chinese mantids and as you may know, they can get pretty big, or at least bigger than the 32oz. Although they are L2 now, I can see them out growing the containers soon. I was wondering if they make them...
