  1. Bathory

    Hello. My current mantis.

They are lovely! What do you feed the gongy? They usually prefer flying prey and sometimes won't eat anything else unless convinced, and supposedly crickets aren't very good for empusids :)

Baking or microwaving sticks from outside

@Predatorhousepet I've read of people who over sterilize their sticks for frogs and they end up with a huge mold problem because all the microfauna is gone, hehe. I'm sure the isopods will do the trick, just rinse the stick if you're worried, I don't and my mantids are still alive and looking...

Baking or microwaving sticks from outside

Honestly there's really no need to sterilize sticks, all you're doing is killing the microfauna that keeps mold at bay. This may be controversial but unless there are ants/spiders or pests on the sticks you really should be fine, if you're worried you can always prepare the terrarium and dump...

    Exo terra for gongylodes?

@Teamonger Oh wow, I wouldn't have imagined violins making it all the way to Iceland! But that's great to hear, I'm not planning on using any live plants or substrate, just paper towels and maybe a small succulent that I already have in my current gongy enclosure. I imagine it's easier to retain...

    Pet store feeder woes

Wow, I've never been sold DEAD feeders. I can't imagine working at a pet store and just pouring crickets into a container without checking to see if they were alive or not. Only issue I've had with pet store crickets is that they tend to be very hungry and thirsty when I get them, as soon as...

    Exo terra for gongylodes?

@Nanodot Humidity shouldn't be an issue with the dry indoor air we get here in Sweden, especially during the winter months :)

    Exo terra for gongylodes?

@CosbyArt I was considering maybe removing one of the doors for more ventilation, but if I don't manage to do that I'll probably be building my own mesh cage with a wood frame :)  Though most caresheets say to use mesh, they usually specify that it's because they need lots of ventilation, and I...

    Exo terra for gongylodes?

So I currently have a 45x45x45 cm exo terra just collecting dust under my desk. If I hot glue a grippy mesh to the walls, would it be suitable for gongys? I know they need tons of ventilation and I'm afraid the exo terras have too much glass but maybe I'm just exaggerating. Would love to get a...

I call it the pig pen.

Ohh nice! Just wondering, how do you do with ventilation?

Does anyone else's mantis do this?

Ripley did this all the time, I don't know how much coconut husk she managed to eat during her short life but she always grabbed the substrate at least 3 times whenever I tried to feed her in the enclosure. Eventually I just resorted to taking her out before feeding because I couldn't deal haha

    Elizabeth Bathory L5 - adult

@Jessie it's a reptile/arachnid/spider store here in Sweden called Herpers Choise (idk if they misspelled that on purpose lmao)! The best pet store I've ever been to tbh, the amount of knowledge and care they put into all their animals is amazing

    Elizabeth Bathory L5 - adult

I can't believe how much this girl has grown since I got her, I remember thinking that she was pretty big when I saw her in the store and that's why I picked her but now she's HUGE! L5 L6 L7 Adult!

Two arthropod deaths in one week

@cwebster The Rhombodera had just had her final molt about two weeks earlier but it was a near death experience, I suspect something went wrong internally that wasn't visible on the outside. The phid was supposedly only 4 months old.

    LF male H. majuscula (Scandinavia)

So my little girl is all grown up now and I'd love to pair her, interested in any type of deal like ooth split, loaning/buying.

Two arthropod deaths in one week

I honestly feel like a bad keeper, today I found my Phidippus regius dead for no apparent reason, just a week after my Rhombodera passed. Both were looking entirely normal and there were no signs that something was wrong. The only thing I can think of is that their favourite plants each had a...

Photoshoot with gongy & H. majuscula

@mantisloverguy6000 Yeah she is and has been for a few days, wing buds are crazy large but she's still eating like a beast :)

Mantis is slow and refuses to eat

I'd up the temperature a bit if possible, depending on the species they like it anywhere from 22-30 degrees. My Hierodula majuscula is at about 25-30 and she's doing pretty good. But you may be right about the ventilation, it's easier to get good ventilation if you have venting at two different...
