Chinese Mantis falling off stick/side of cage

Well Bruce has been moved to Barry's cage since Barry passed this evening.  :(  It's the first time we've really interacted with her. She's laid one ooth. She lunged at the stick when we tried to move her and it scared the out of me!

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

She's gone. I didn't expect to be this sad.  :( What do you all do with your mantids that have passed on?

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

It's been an amazing (and short) journey. Just wish we had more time together!

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

I've righted her and put her on a stone from her cage. I've tried giving her water and honey, but she doesn't seem to be interested. Her entire posture indicates she seems to be dying.

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

It sucks. Thought we'd have her a little longer. I know their lives are short, but was hoping for a few more weeks. Last night when she was on the top of her cage, her abdomen was hanging oddly. Like it was drooping. I thought it was strange.  I've tried giving her water and honey, but it...

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

Well, it seems like Barry is dying. :( She was on her back today when I got home. I righted her and tried to give her some water, but she's nearly unresponsive. Her head is bowed and won't really move unless I nudge her, and even then, she's not really responsive. Is there anything I can try...

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

I do have tons of pics of her! I think she's going to lay her SIXTH ootheca soon!

    What's your least favorite insect?

I know! I think I first saw it on reddit. I've been using it ever since. It's so... fitting.

Why thank you. ;) I was pretty pleased myself.

    What's your least favorite insect?

I know - they are so gross. When I first started seeing them, I flipped out. Then, I made my peace with them (well, they're in the basement). I still hate them, but I do eliminate them when I see them.

    Feeder enclosures

I need to get a handle on my feeder situation. We were buying the crickets 20 - 30 at a time and keeping them in a bucket downstairs, but that wasn't working out. I kept forgetting to feed them and they'd get stinky and die. I just don't want to spend $20 on a cricket keeper! LOL

    What's your least favorite insect?

House centipedes, aka "turbo moustaches". Ugh. So fast!

    Hello from Kentucky!

We found our first Carolina mantis late this summer and we brought her indoors and kept her. She's been an awesome pet and we let her out to roam around every now and again. Here's a pic:

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

Our Carolina mantis, Barry Mantilow, has now laid FIVE ooths (oothecas?). She seems to be doing really well. She even has her own plant in her cage now. :) I take her out every now and again and let her "free range" in my bedroom, She's been so cool to have and learn about. I will be so sad...

    Climbing materials for mantids

Going to jump in here since one of mine keeps trying (and failing) to climb a plastic corner despite there being sticks in the cage.

Chinese Mantis falling off stick/side of cage

Not sure how old she is. We brought her in from outside October 19. So we've had about three weeks. We have been putting the crickets in the critter keeper with them since last time I tried to keep them in a bucket it got really smelly. I am getting smaller crickets now since some of the ones we...

Chinese Mantis falling off stick/side of cage

We have another mantis named Bruce, a Chinese mantis. Turns out Bruce is a female, as she laid and ootheca last week. Who knew?  I was watching her tonight and she keeps trying to climb up the corner of the smooth plastic critter keeper we have her in. She has sticks, but for some reason, keeps...
