    abdomen raising

Not sure. I don't think it makes tham appear larger, perhaps it helps them to avoid gettin their abs wet...those little guys can die if they get stuck to a drop of water... Some adults do the up ab thang too...

Learn something new every day! ^_^

Oh yeah, they often do a double-burst for me... most usually come out, then, a few hours later (up to a day) , The "slow" ones usually pop out. I usually leave the Ooth in the tank for a while, but I never saw 'em pop out long after the first ones wiggled out... :)

    New species

Someone needs to cross a Mantis and a dog. Now THAT would be a cool "man's best friend"....till it grabbed ya and started chompin' on yer kneecaps...

    New species

it's hard, because it's hard to pick out a song both species will "get it on" to! :P Also, different species consider other species either a threat, or lunch. You know what the girls do to their OWN men, imagine what they'd do to a dude that lookd different... She's eat him up for lunch...

Ok, yeah, I know I'm weird...

Yes, she fell during her final molt. I just made a video of her cleaning herself - I am still amazed she didn't try to remove the bionic legs! Check it out: http://media.putfile.com/Mantis-Cleans-his-Bionic-Legs Edit: whoops, I keep forgetting that it's a "she" ;)

Ok, yeah, I know I'm weird...

Yeah, I can't see killin' her if she can still catch crickets. Her wings were completely messed up when I found her. She doesn't have much trouble moving around. layin' Ooths will be another story... We'll just hafta see. -------------------------------------------------------------- IN...

Ok, yeah, I know I'm weird...

She isn't exactly "in misery", I would do it if she seemed unable to move around... but she's doing just fine. She's an adult, (she fell during her last molt) so she doesn't hafta worry about those bionic legs of hers... I bring her out and she crawls all over. I put her in the bottom of her...

Ok, yeah, I know I'm weird...

Splinter is doing well with his new bionic legs! He just ran over and ate a piece of chicken... ;)

Ok, yeah, I know I'm weird...

Awww, Last night, I could tell Splinter was getting ready to molt, he wouldn't eat, he was moving like his skin was too tight, and climbed upside down "into the position", on the top of his tank. I made sure the tank was moist, and went to bed. When I got up to go to work, I saw he was just...

    gongylus gongylodes cannibalism

It's possible that the one started molting, and the other saw movement, and just snatched him. YOu know how mantids are sometimes...

    Wacky Question...food dye

The mantis is ok, I stopped with the food dye after it let me know it didn't really like the taste of it. (wiped it's mouth on the floor whenever it drank any) The next shed, it lost almost all the pink color, now, a shed or two later, it's almost an adult and is brown.

    Tenodera ooths.

Just be careful for squirrels and birds! They tend to find the ooths yummy (or the squirels chomp on them, thinking they might be bulbs or nuts or something...)

    Peruvian mantid pics

Very cool pics! I love seein' mantids in the "threat" pose. The pic with the smaller one is really funny, looks like the gbigger one is protectin' the smaller one... :D

    Chinese mantis - Bad molts

That's what I was afraid of. I snipped it off, and he didn't seem to mind it that much. Now he seems to be a lot happier when he's moving around. Thanks for the advice... -FieroRumor

    Chinese mantis - Bad molts

Howdy! I have a Chinese mantis that has a bad rear leg - it has gotten worse with each molt. it is now the last molt before adult, and that rear leg is curled like a "C". His other legs seem just fine...Any ideas as to what happened to that one leg?

    Mantid defences

I've never seen any of my mantids excrete water, but last week, one did "toss" some my way when I went to pick him up... ;) (from it's butt)

    Wacky Question...food dye

I only fed him a little food dye a few times, and it did affect his coloring. His forehead, thorax, and top side of his abdomen are a pink-to-reddish color, the rest of him is green. The Chinese mantids around here are usually brown, it will be interesting to see what color he ends up being...
