    What is this critter?

Every time I buy Crix these little guys are in there (or something similar) two or three at a time. As said they clean up the crix mess. Clever really.

Anybody here in Long Beach have mantids?

Too humid and the Ooth will quickly develop mold. The mould will attack the eggs if the ooth is badly effected and they will die. I keep my ooths in exactly the same conditions as the female that laid them. That is humidity and temperature. I have heard that increased humidity can fasten hatch...

    Mantid Eyesight

I have an african that will do the same. He will turn to watch the movement of the TV and then crouch flat infront of it. I think it is the movement of the TV screen that attracts them and because they are not clear on what is going on they crouch down to better camuflage themself from a...

    Keeping temperature on nymphs?

I also keep mine at room temp but do have a small heater for the colder winter months. It can get a might chilly at night.

    ..and more..

I have seen loads of your Pics Drizzt and they are all fantastic. You seem to be able to capture alot of detail in your photos. I actually have one of your older pictures as my back groud on my computer I liked it so much. :D I espeacially like the pictures of the Oxypilus distinctus. They...

    Sphodromantis viridis and hierodula membranacea

Like the Pics. What kind of housing are you using to keep them in and what kind of substrate? :?: :D

    Cilnia humeralis

Hay Morph, Lovely pics. Think you have a male there though. Although the last two segments on the abdomen are very small I can count 8. He has great colouration. :D

    Orchid Mantis Mating Sequence

I have 4 orchids at the moment. 2 female Sub-adults (just) and 2 males. One male molted to adult today and the other I don't think is far behind. I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't take long for one of the females to mature to adult and I can attempt to mate this species for the first...

    What DO you do?

I have the same problem. No one is local to my house who knows how to keep my bugs. I put enough food in my mantid enclosures to last 1 week. I asked my future father in law who was local to spray my bugs every two days. I left notes on how much each one needed spraying. He didn't need to...

    Chinese ooth hatched

All sounds good to me. If you can keep the number of mantids in the region of thirty that will be a good number for you to breed your next generation. You only need to spray them every 2-3 days I think. Someone might disagree with me but as nymphs they are more susceptible to the highs and lows...

    Set-up photos?

I keep all mine in our one and only spare bedroom. Ideally I want to get a large enough Bug Shed set-up in our garden. I'm fed up of finding the occasional Cricket running over the bathroom floor

    Humidity

You can buy a Hygrometer that will attached to the inside of you viv. This will register the humidity of your tank. They are cheap and easy to find on the net or reptile pt shops. I would say as a general rule, if you are using a substrate such as vermiculite or Spagnum moss to acheive a...

    Beginner's mantis?

An african species. Good size, relatively easy to care for, eats most any insect. I would look to buying a mantid that is big enough to tackle crickets rather than fruit flies for a first timer. Also get more than one to start with. I would get two or three.

    Mantis lost foreleg during molt

Thats unfortunate. I think at 6th - 7th instar there will be some re-growth but not total re-formation of the entire limb. A picture would be useful. I have not had to hand feed any mantids YET so can't offer any advise based on experience. I wonder if he can still catch small prey items...
