Newby Q: Not crickets... but what?

But if you're keeping them in the cricket tubs- it's useful for giving them back the moisture they require without spraying and having the food go mouldy...

Newby Q: Not crickets... but what?

Personally, I can't see any problems with all cricket diets like Rick said - protein is protein, fat is fat and water is water so whether you get different amounts from different sources shouldn't matter. Although it could be a vitamin, mineral and *omega 3 oil* type thing- perhaps some insects...

    Question about cannibalism

Yeah, Yen's right- damn mantids!!! - You leave them together hoping it'll be natural selection n all and you go in one morning to find they've all died of starvation :(

Newby Q: Not crickets... but what?

Virtually any insect is fine for mantids but I know how you feel- people who live/ have lived with friends, family, relatives all have this problem of what they can get away with... As for what you technically CAN feed to mantids- everything is fine although there are a few general rules...

    bye

Yeah, mantids don't live long (sorry to say) - but if she's adult you could try mating her- this will carry on her mantis genes and mean that she hasn't been wasted :) - or you could pin her- treasure her memory forever :)

    Flour Beetles?

Yeah, in a way I think mantids are lazy... if you offer one a beetle that has been crushed, they're fine! - I've fed adults ground beetles before which are over an inch long as adults and they love them (enjoy the crunchiness  ) but the nymphs attack very feebly and if it falls out of...

    Flour Beetles?

I actually have been trying these - I have two species of beetles as feeders- one about 1-2mm long and the other about 3-4mm long. They are NOT popular with hatchlings - I've been trying to feed the larger kind to some grandis - I'll keep you posted :)

    Forum Question

wondering if this is just me but every time I go on the forum (at home, at uni and on my mobile) - when I click on a post that is dark (unread), it doesn't change to the 'read' colour until I go back to the main window. It used to change back when u went back a page. Hard to explain- anyway, is...

    Amateur Entomologists' Society Exhibition

Sorry Francisco... I was looking out for those species particularly but none were on sale. There was this german group as you go in towards the left which had a few interesting species but none like those. (bit pricey too) :? still looking though :D

    Amateur Entomologists' Society Exhibition

No idea... was chatting to her at the back and suddenly this dude comes and she's dragging me towards the front... :) personally I like a big crowd... bugs are more fun to buy when you think you've just worked hard to get them through a crowd

    beetle food problem

Cleaning anything would help... Anywhere where something is rotting or decomposing will attract flies. Clean/ remove any unused food-scraps and they will lose interest and/or die out. Only exception I can think of where this is a bad idea are millipedes- as they leave vital nutrients/ proteins...

    beetle food problem

It should... I have the same problem with those flies- they get everywhere! Best advice is to prevent them from getting to the banana in the first place. Clean the soil (say with boiling water- or replace it) - so there are no pupae/ larvae still there and then cover all air holes with a fine...

    Fruit fly problem.

How long between you last opened it and the day you checked to find they were all dead? - If it's a day (even two) I highly doubt it was due to air- these are tough lil guys! - besides, if it was sent in the post like that, I doubt the company would be very popular if the package (which can take...

    Bird Grasshopper

Just curious as I'm not familiar with that species (or many in the US) - the colouration on it might suggest a sllight level of toxicity? Can you confirm this? - maybe only to mammals etc because I know many insect toxins aren't poisonous to other insects... right/ wrong?

    Ootheca hatching time

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this but I am (at this very second) watching my h.grandis hatch out and I realised what everyone has come to believe might be triggered by light... i.e. we're all used to ooths hatching early morning (in general)- but maybe it's not so much a circadian rhythm...

New orchid and C.Modesta from Yen!

Go outside and get some aphids, small WORKER ants (not those big ones with nasty jaws), whitefly, leaf hoppers (cuckoo spit)... things like that should work fine. If you can't, you could try hand feeding by cutting something bigger and putting it near its mouth p.s. cool pics :)

    Atlas moths :?

Many of my moths did that- I think I even had the 'pleasure' :? of seeing it some times... I would presume it's the 'meconium' (anyone who works with drosophila will know what this is) - it's basically the first excretion of all the waste products accumulated during metamorphosis - i.e. nothing...
