I've ordered flies from Mantisplace a couple times now and unfortunately I've been disappointed. Not in the quality of the flies - they've hatched out just fine - but in the packaging and media the pupae come in. It smells so bad and gets everywhere due to being packaged in mesh bags! Pupae from...
With 34 pages of positive feedback mine is barely needed, but I did just complete a great transaction with Yen. Even with a post office delay (not his fault!) the two adult cat-eyes made it fine, and he even included a Boxer nymph and wire mantis sculpture as extras. I definitely recommend!
My millipede tank has gotten...a bit overcrowded. (They've been going at it like rabbits.) I'm selling juveniles that are 1.5-2 inches long in groups of 10 for $25 plus shipping. If you're interested in a larger order just let me know. Pretty sure I have at least 40 to sell.
I agree about the room temp. I've definitely had random deaths with this species, but they're generally more hardy than other species I keep. My house is generally around 73 but gets down to the upper 60s on cool nights. Mine are in mesh cages so the humidity has been as low as 30% during the...
Yeah, I'm interested in trying Popa spurca next. I volunteer in the insect department of a science museum, so I'm trying to breed mantids for them and other local museums. They always have displays of single female orchids or dead leafs, but I think large displays of (relatively)communal species...
While I know most agree there is no true "communal" species of mantis, there are a few species that people are able to house together successfully. I currently have cat-eyes (perfect angels) and ghosts (tricky until I figured out they love hiding in ferns), but I would like to experiment with...
If Cinnamon is anything like my Heterochaetas, she/he will hang from the top most of the time. Leaving the stick for some decor and a place for prey to crawl is a good idea, but it could definitely be shorter, or cut down to just a single piece that rests to one side rather than branching out.
I've had that happen plenty of times, but it seems to happen less if I put a small piece of damp paper towel in with the pupae after taking them out of my fridge. No substrate, just a plastic cup with mesh lid.
My Heterochaetas are in a mesh enclosure and it's about 50/50 if they molt on the top or sides, so I don't know that it really matters. I think the only issue would be what was mentioned above about the low branches because they may not judge distance to the bottom of the enclosure. I'm waiting...
Do you use the mesh tape or the paper? If it's the mesh does it have any sticky residue that gets on their feet? I've got cat eyes in a big glass terrarium and I know they would like more climbing surfaces than the sticks I have in there.
You guys are good! Most people miss the mantis "butt" on the left side of the picture. I have 10 this size and 1 in another enclosure because she's a couple molts ahead. She might be totally fine with the but I'll let these guys get a bit bigger before testing that theory.
I'll need to separate the herd into two large enclosures after they molt again to make sure everybody has room, but they are super mellow and suited for communal living.
Thanks! I think I figured out at least one issue that led to the cannibalism last week. I didn't realize that they had already "outgrown" the fruit flies because the nymphs still seem so small, but after I put in a small bottle fly as an experiment it got snatch up pretty quickly. I also...
The Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC. They've got one of the largest butterfly house/insectariums in the country. Really amazing place to play with bugs!
Sure, I have an Etsy store with lots of pieces you can see. https://www.etsy.com/shop/leafandwingjewelry
I've worked with pieces (most butterfly wings) in resin for a couple years, and recently I started electroforming with copper.
I know that there is some debate about keeping ghost mantises communally - some say it's fine if they're given space and enough food, some say separate the females, some say don't try it at all. I currently have 5 L3-4 nymphs together in a medium sized mesh enclosure with some sticks for...
