Hi Bunnywafer - glad you're here!

Hi, I'm not good with computers!

Greetings Sue! Food, temps, misting - mantis are easy, you can do it! :)

    First Problem

I stole the name Tripod from others here, thanks. Tripod continues to climb around and catch his own food - here's a lousy photo of him munching a housefly caught while climbing on a branch. He holds the fly in his good claw with the clumsy left claw hanging off to the side, though he uses both...

    Help molting?

Does it walk around with just some of the old skin stuck to it, or is it stuck in place where it started molting with most of the old skin attached? Other than making sure the humidity is way up ~90% (droplets on glass) I'm not sure what else you can do.

    Ghost Mantis Mismolt

One technique that seems to work is to take a juicy bug of some sort, break off the head, get some juice sticking out of the opening, and touch that to the mantis' mouth. Usually the taste of food will start them feeding and it may grab onto the food and finish it.

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Simple eyes or ocelli. As opposed to the large compound eyes.

    First Problem

'Tripod' continues to feed and do well, even hanging upside down from leaves and sticks like he normally would. My trick for feeding him is to put a cold-stunned fly on a leaf near him - when the fly wakes up and moves, it gets nailed! He ate a huge BB that way today - his 'normal' adult...

WARNING: Nursery plants killed 24 of my 30 mantis

I am in the plant nursery business (orchids). Sorry to repeat something that I posted in the other thread about this: When you mass-culture a large group of plants, it is like a huge buffet line for plant pests, both insect and fungal. Most consumers expect to buy 100% perfect looking plants...

    Orchid butts

They are all about the same size, but on the last molt (L5?) the #2 above got maybe 10% bigger than the other 2. I'm trying to speed up the girl and slow down the boys - the girl is at 80 degrees and gets fed every time she'll eat, and the boys are at 78 degrees and will be fed once or twice a...

    Hello from China

Hello Kunsam! What part of China are you from, the south, the east? I look forward to seeing photos of your local Chinese mantis!

    Orchid butts

Alright, I know it's a very basic question but what sex do you think each of these orchids is? Orchid #1 Orchid #2 Orchid #3 I want to breed them eventually and so I need to feed and speed up the girls and slow down the boys. I think that 1 & 3 are boys and 2 is a girl, but...

    My new creos( x16 ) and violins ( 4 )

ShieldMantis - was it able to free itself from the shed skin? (looks like the head/raptors are stuck in the old skin)

    Hello from NE Ohio

Hi Gene! I'm sorry, I had to do it. Lots of great info here! IMO you might start culturing fruit flies in anticipation of the ooths hatching, or get your sources of food lined up so you are ready for the Mantis Invasion.

    Hello from France

Great to see you here Serge!

    First Problem

Ryan - it is probably sub-adult (or possibly sub-sub), so I don't think there are enough sheds to allow the leg to re-grow much. Bio - the new adult male was staring at it's roommate all afternoon and when I accidentally bumped the cage, it did the raised-wing threat at the other mantis...

    First Problem

Que sera, sera... I never really trusted communal living among mantids so even with my Ghosts and Creos, I don't keep more than 2 together. With the Creos I tried to match the size of the roommates but they don't always grow equally. With one cage yesterday, even though they were both...
