How does a mantis know where the head of an insect is?

also, dont mantids snip the wings off butterflies and moths, in the same kind of instinctive way?

How does a mantis know where the head of an insect is?

it's kind of similar to when a big cat goes for the neck to suffocate it's prey, it's the easiest way to immobilize the whole animal. i suppose they've evolved to instinctively go for that area, more often than not, because the ones that have were more successful. i find it surpising how many...

How does a mantis know where the head of an insect is?

i reckon if they see an insect moving and can position themselves right that SOME mantids will attempt to eat the head and neck area first. they definitely arent going at random

    making an orchid pink ?

from what i've read many times - with mantids sometimes it's the humidity or temperature that can influence their shade, and i've read that sometimes it can be the colour of their surroundings. obviously genetics plays a part in this, but i reckon that if you had a whole lineage of white orchid...

    mildly interesting observation

true, but a bad moult can be worse than just a deformed leg. you could try feeding the bad moulter it's own body parts, see how far it gets  last time one went terribly wrong i stuck it in the freezer straight away. i was told this was the most humane way of euthanizing them. but...

Can I use this icecream box to hatch an ooth?

yea looks like it might be hard to find all the mantids if they get amongst the moss, but i guess that doesnt matter much. also, are the holes in the mesh too big? hard to tell without size reference. (it's just you might want to put fruit flies in there)

    mantids ways of attracting prey?

sometimes i'm surprised by how fruit flies will wander towards a motionless plain looking mantis, and think there might be more to what's going on than meets the eye. ways i know of that they get prey to come near them are : looking like a flower, and i assume - when orchids wiggle their...
