    your pick?

Overrated: B. mendica. Don't know what it is about them...but they don't impress me. Underrated: O. peruviana and S. limbata. Not the biggest. But when it comes to behavior, those are at the top of my list. Plus S. limbata is by far the most bullet-proof mantis I've seen. Very adaptable...

    Atlas moths anyone?

A lot of them live for a year. But they are only ADULT moths for 1-2 weeks...the rest is spent as eggs, larvae and cocoons. The cocoons are spectacular silk constructions, and the caterpillars are often bigger than a mouse. The adults have no mouth...so they can't eat. They live on stored fat...

    Atlas moths anyone?

Well, I can only speak for myself...but I don't think I've ever held something in my hand that impressed me as much as some Giant Silkmoths. And I've kept a lot of critters over the years. I've never held an adult I. diabolica, but I imagine it would be a similar feeling. Also, they generally...

    Rick - (US)

I just received a Mantis from Rick. He shipped it quickly and the mantis was so healthy and Rick packed it SO WELL that it survived a DHL screw-up that delayed arrival by 2 days! Thanks Rick :D . Obie

    Battle of the nymphs!

Well, midterms are over and the H. grandis have come out on top. I have separated the remaining nymphs and put an end to the carnage. The P. aeruginosa were completely wiped out, and just a few battle-hardened S. limbata remained. I'm selling my extra H. grandis nymphs for $5 each if anyone...

    Argema mittrei cocoons!

I have 5 HUGE live Comet Moth (A. mittrei) cocoons from Madagascar for sale. This amazing silkmoth is almost never available alive in the US. They will be $35 each plus shipping ($12 overnight). I can try to sex them by size/weight, but no guarantees. Email me at [email protected] if you're...

I have an ooth, but I'm beginning to think its not going to hatch :( . I do plan to keep this species one way or another though :D .

What is the best container to keep Nymphs in?

I do exactly as Rick does, deli cups w/ foam plugs, except that I also close a layer of polyester screen netting (http://www.bioquip.com/default.asp) under the lid for added grip during shedding. This prevents "the fall" that can happen during shedding once the mantises get larger.

My wolf spiders, lots of pics too

I think I have to move to Brazil now. Yes, I definitely need to move to Brazil. As soon as possible. :D

    looking for LARGE mantid

I'm pretty sure some Ischnomantis species from Africa and some Macromantis species from South America are a bit larger than Hierodula (Giant Asian/Indians). We may never see them alive in captivity though :(

    Tapos

I ordered a Hierodula grandis ooth from Dale. He packed it very well and sent it quickly, and it arrived in perfect condition. The TWO freebees he threw in were also in perfect condition :D . It was great dealing with Dale and I will definitely order from him again. 8) Obie

    Why not to use latin?

This could be a problem with 2 different Sphodromantis species, as you mentioned. Hybridization is much more likely between closely related species than between those that simply look similar though. Similarity of appearance to the casual observer does not equate to reproductive compatability...

    Why not to use latin?

Personally, I think scientific names are easier, once you get used to the system. Take the "marbled mantis" for example. Which marbled mantis are we talking about?? What if a dealer decides to call them "mottled mantises" instead (it happens)? I think the only way to distinguish the two...

    Battle of the nymphs!

Well, I've been inundated with requests for nymphs  . I should have realized that would happen, since there are many who would love some and it sounds like I'm wasting them. Here's the situation: I am not opposed to selling some at a later date. But I will be extremely busy with...

    Battle of the nymphs!

On tuesday I had an ooth of P. aeruginosa, an ooth of H. grandis, and an ooth of S. limbata hatch. Thats right, ooths from 3 different species, laid weeks apart, all hatched at exactly the same time! I'm a little short on space and I still have unhatched ooths of all 3 species  , so I...

    Feeding Nymphs

Shelfordella tartara=Blatta lateralis. They are both names for the Turkistan Roach (or red runner). Shelfordella is an older name.
