    Parasitic wasps

Hi, Has anyone had any problems with wild caught ootheca being parasitized by wasps? I am thinking of using this as the basis of a research project for my degree and would be keen to hear of peoples experiences of this and if anyone is unfortunate enough to hatch out any wasps I would be keen...

    Idolomantis adults

Hi Guys, I posted earlier this week about one of my Idolos which shed to L9 but died, that one was definitely adult as it had fully formed wings. Today another one shed to L9 but is still a nymph?! It has small bud wings and its abdomen still folds up over its thorax. Are there different...

    idolomantis falling while moulting

It didn't die but was unable to support itself on its legs or hang so I had to put it out of its misery. Alan

    idolomantis falling while moulting

Disaster last night! I thought my oldest L8 idolo was ready to shed so have been keeping a close eye on it. Went to check last night and saw the shed skin hanging from the top of the net cage and the new adult at the bottom. Suprisingly it had managed to haul itself off the ground so I...

    idolomantis falling while moulting

I now have 2 L8's and one L7, IF they make it to adulthood I would love to breed them....I guess it will depend if the adult moult is as difficult as the last one!

    Fear or Crazy?

How are you picking her up? I don't generally handle my mantids but if I have to, I coax them to walk onto my hand or a stick.

    idolomantis falling while moulting

Unfortunately lost one of mine during its L7 to L8 moult last night. It was exactly the same setup as other successful moults. Shame when they get so close to adulthood. They seem to have such feeble hooks to support such a heavy body.

    Orchid

Hi Jwonni, Sorry to hear that. I've never kept orchids but it definitely sounds like it fell during the moult. It may not die straight away but chances are it will not be able to feed itself or even walk so will die eventually. Personally I would put it out of its misery, some people might...

    idolomantis falling while moulting

Had another successful shed to L8 today. The pics aren't great as I didn't want to disturb it yet but you get an idea of the layout which I have had success with. They are fake Ivy plants, when I first saw it, the prey catching legs were also streched out and haning onto the ivy...

Why aren't we captive breeding Idolomantis??

I've managed to raise mine to L7/L8 so far and they are still going strong. It does seem that moulting becomes more tricky after L6, but this is covered in another post. I think the bottom line is like Christian says, they haven't been in culture for that long but we are learning as we go...
