    success rate?

Hi again, guys! I have a question for everyone--well, for those of you who haven't lost count by now. What would you say your "success rate" has been in raising mantids? By which I mean, how many mantids have you had that have made it all the way to perishing at a "ripe old age"? And how does...

    When will my newborns molt?

when they no longer respond to food items, and/or when their tiny little abdomens look so plump that they couldn't possibly eat more, they're probably ready to molt. It shouldn't be very long, maybe a week or so after hatching (though I've heard it can take up to around 20 days in some...

    'Nother wild-caught needing an ID!

Haha sawas di ka! Chan rak dakkadan dum caow mak mak (there are so many species here)! Shan poot pasa thai di nitnoi, ka. But clearly, I cannot write it (though I'm working on learning the thai abugida)! Haha and the language transliterates to english so poorly, it's almost embarrassing. I just...

    Which species is your favorite?

Mannn I've only ever had experience with three different species. Out of those, the fearless Heirodula sp. are my favorite. Easy to care for, and excellent dispositions! Their fearlessness makes them fun and relaxing to handle, as well. At least, this has been my experience! If I were to go on...

    Lots of chalky, white excretion??

Yeah, after doing a bit more researching, I have concluded that it is indeed just excess fluid being expelled and drying up on the side of the tank. Apparently depending on humidity, it may turn yellow, or chalky white. And now I am just surprised at the amount of fluid she has been expelling...

just remember even ghosts will eat each other

Normally I feel sad to hear about the death of mantids, but this actually made me giggle-snort. What a greedy gut hahaha!

    'Nother wild-caught needing an ID!

here are some more photos of her for posterity. I have named her Jiu. I have a feeling these guys are pretty common around here, but their small size, speed, as well as their excellent flying capabilities makes them difficult to spot, let alone catch. I have a feeling I was very lucky to...

    Vivariums!

I just wanted to show off the vivariums that we set up for my two girls! I picked out the plants and the enclosures, and my fiance did all the interior decorating. He made the enclosures look quite beautiful, and so I can't help but show 'em off! The third terrarium tucked away back there is...

    'Nother wild-caught needing an ID!

Amantis sp. looks and sounds about right! Thanks, guys!! @mantidbro, I'm really happy too! I use to live in canada in areas too cold for most insects. So living in thailand has really igniting my life long love of bugs (especially mantids) once again!!

    'Nother wild-caught needing an ID!

Well, this one managed to find me. She was waiting for me on the rear view mirror of my car, and I found her as we were leaving to visit my in-laws. I had come across her species once before, but didn't have a chance to document it at the time. To iterate, I live in southern Thailand...

    Lots of chalky, white excretion??

Hey guys! Maybe you can help put my mind to ease with this. My Hierodula sp. is a fully grown lady who's just started calling for a mate for about two weeks now. I clean the walls of her enclosure frequently, and for the past while, I have noticed an excessive amount of white splattering on...

    Riem's Photo Booth!

Well, I got my adult--but I'm rather bummed out as she appears to have lost the foot of her left, back most leg... She can still walk on it no problem, but the "toes" which are used for gripping are no longer present, and so she can not use that one leg for hanging onto surfaces. I'm really...

    Riem's Photo Booth!

Miss Riem Sausagewings. These photos were taken this morning. It’s after dark here now, in Thailand—and Riem is hanging from the top of her terrarium doing some serious kegels. I should definitely have an adult Statilia by morning! :D

Enclosures with live vegetation/plant life discussion

I use live plants, as well. It's pretty simple for me, though. Since I only raise wild caught nymphs/mantids native to my location, finding suitable vegetation to plant in their vivariums is super easy. Maintaining a healthy, happy living vivarium is all part of the fun I get out of keeping...

    Penh's Photo Booth!

Figure 1.0-1.3 Here we see the Giant Asian Mantis stalking it’s prey (seen on the right). Truly the picture of a majestic, and efficient huntress; a graceful killing machine.

    Penh's Photo Booth!

hehe thanks, guys! And yes, I couldn't have asked for a better mantis to enter into this wonderful hobby with! Penh has been so nice to me ; u; <3! I simply adore her!!

Do mantids always stop eating before a molt?

Definitely, My Hierodula sp. ate voraciously even mere hours before every molt! She never even grew sluggish! She'd stalk prey from across her terrarium just before I'd go to sleep, and then always molted sometime in the middle of the night (her final molt into adulthood was the only exception)...

    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

in all seriousness, these mantids are so beautiful! I really hope they can be bred succesfully! I have no faith in my own ability to raise such tiny mantids (nor do I have any faith in the Thai postal service, for that matter), and so I have no interest in acquiring any myself, but I hope they...

    Penh's Photo Booth!

aw shucks, thanks guys!! Penh has gone a bit viral on the interwebs, she was featured on the Tumblr radar (and in the #animals tag), was featured on thefrogman and even on cuteoverload! So that's kind of--surprising to me, especially considering she's my very first mantis (and not a terribly...
