    fleurdejoo

Jude generously sent me a Creo picti male to breed with my female for nothing more than the cost of shipping. The packing was par excellence and the little guy arrived in perfect health... and she checked back in on him a week or so later. I would trade with her ANY TIME, she takes fantastic...

    Bites

Oh my... lol. I've kept 13 species now and none of them have ever bitten me, although I don't push it when the adult idolos fling their arms up and hiss :) I've also never kept Cilnia.

    New member with "rescued" mantis

Welcome fellow Tennessean :) I've had lots of them with missing arms, they eat smaller prey but they do fine.

    Ghosts

Oh my gosh, you've got lots of green... I'm jealous.

    Ghosts

I have L2-3 P. paradoxa nymphs (and plenty of them....). Asking $3 each or 5 for $12. Priority shipping is something like $6, Express $25? I'd have to check on the express. I'm also very willing to make some trades for them, tell me what you've got.

    Icee Enclosure Pic Tutorial

I dig it. You can take off the lid and put it back on with much less chance of squishing the mantis.

This site is pretty good for that. http://www.mantisonline.de/index.php?lan=en

    Two surprises tonight

I love that first pic! I've noticed my ghosts seem to guard their ooths. Anyone else notice this?

    Brunners mortality

Wow, there's a lot of conflicting information. I can't find anything resembling a care sheet, either. Can we start a Brunners consolidated, maybe? It's maintained between 6 and 8 in the 80 oz, population wise. They seem to be getting to a couple of weeks old and then dying off. When I first...

    Idolomantis Consolidated

How much should I be feeding my subadults? I was going by the way their abdomens looked, but I woke up this morning to one of the females devouring the male... :(

    Feeding nymphs

I recommend one of Rebecca's hex containers. It opens on the side so they can hang out on the ceiling and you won't disturb to feed. They're affordable too. I do recommend ventilating it very well. Otherwise, yeah, cut yourself a side port and use a funnel to feed. Http://www.mantisplace.com...

    most active species?

Oh, they do... I just meant, some mantids are active hunters and not very active otherwise. Spinies are just generally busy.

    GHOSTS

They're awesome! They do the cutest butt-wiggle walk :D

    Brunners mortality

Thanks. I'll raise temp and decrease spraying.

    Brunners mortality

I have a pretty high mortality rate on my B. borealis hatchlings (>50%)... what is it like typically? They are in an 80 oz deli cup (between 8 and a dozen depending on who's hatching and who's surviving) with about a 3" square cut out of the side with screening, top is the normal...

Help! Nymphs drying out and dying!

If you're hatching inside and keeping them inside, no. They'll hatch fine whenever. If you want to release, it's pretty late in the year and depending on where you live they may not survive to breed out there. Depends on the point of your experiment :) If you're strictly keeping them indoors...

Can you breed mantids with their siblings?

Huh. I think they're awesome, they're one of our fave species. You can put me on your list for ooth, I have all females and I'd really like to continue keeping them. Inbred offspring may be weaker, but I'd wager they'll be stronger than my parthenogenic babies. I had pretty dismal survival...

    killer yard sale deal!

    Holy :poop: Score!!!
  19. Chivalry

    most active species?

Seconded. Active, but not "jumpy." I think this is a highly underrated species. They want to come out and look around every time you open the enclosure (and I usually have to trick mine to go back in!) Also, if you want something that's fun to watch when not hunting, P. wahlbergii are...

    Mealworms

Agreed. Most mantids seem to need a little coaxing to take creepy crawlies but I like to get them used to it as a food source. I think it's a really handy food to give an aggressive female to keep her from thinking about the male on her back :)
