Oh wow, well done! I'm a bit late to the party but I'm so happy it worked out!

Sometimes you can tell they're going to molt when they refuse food but not all mantids do that. The way I've been able to tell with mine is that they get sluggish, if I pick them up they tend to almost drag their abdomen around and the segment look a bit flared. I have some pics of my H...

nymphs dying. Dry red substance left on lid of enclosure.

Mantids can throw up if they overeat but it shouldn't be bad enough to kill them. Keep in mind that many nymphs in the wild die, it's the reason why some species hatch so many nymphs from one ooth. Some of them just aren't healthy from the start and they tend to die during the earlier instars...

Is it the back two legs? If you're in a pinch and she looks like she may be molting, you can use blu tack to secure her legs to the top of the enclosure. This is very much a last resort but I know there are people who have had success doing this.

    Partial hatch?

So good new, my first violin ooth hatched! I counted six little mini nymphs and they all look healthy, no one is deformed or anything. My question is, is it common for oothecae to hatch over a longer period of time? Six nymphs seems like a very small amount considering the size of the ooth, and...

    Won't eat dubia roaches

I noticed with my mantids that if they won't take a feeder and I cut it up so they realise it's food sooner or later they will grab a whole live one. This worked with wax worms and crickets but I didn't try it with roaches as my mantids seemed to grab them anyway. For roaches I just got some...

    Do you name your mantises?

Most of mine have names but I'm struggling with my gongy males, so far only one out of 3 has a name and it's Peg leg, with the others I just go by their colours :)

    Hello from New England!

    Welcome, such a pretty nymph!

    Ooth questions

So Lilith and Peg leg mated and everything went great. They had both been adults for several weeks so there's a high chance it was successful.  Now I have some questions about numbers: 1. How long before I can expect her to lay her first ooth? 2. How many ooths is she likely to lay? 3. I'm...

Can mantids breed before 2 weeks?

@CosbyArt That's what I thought. Though I have had some people tell me that there has been successful mating with very young female but it's highly unlikely. And don't worry I wouldn't be breeding if I hadn't read every online source I could find, it's just that there's no explanation as to why...

Can mantids breed before 2 weeks?

So I recently got Lilith and Peg leg (Gongylus gongylodes) to breed, yay! After they were done I put Lilith back into her own enclosure so she can fatten up good. I was making space for some banana cockroaches and decided I'd put my other adult female in with the males temporarily, only to find...

    First Adult

Ohh what a small baby, congrats!

    First adult male!

@CosbyArt Thank you! The leg is still smaller and thinner than the others but it doesn't seem to bother him, I think he must've lost it at a pretty late instar

    First adult male!

I woke up today to find that my male gongy with a wonky leg had had his finalt molt! He is ridiculously small compared to my adult female and I think he's even smaller than my sub. I LOVE the antennae on this little guy.

    Cyriocosmus chicoi

So I took the dive and I did it good, now I'm the happy owner of a teeny tiny dwarf! It's super skittish and almost escaped but now it's safe and sound in it's new home.

    Enclosure Size

My H. majuscula is in a 12x12x12 exo terra and it housed my Rhombodera as well with no issues. Both of them molted to adult in 8x8x16 terrariums but I wanted to give them a bit more room to move around because they really just prefer to hang from the top so all that height wasn't really crucial...

    Springtails

    1. It should be enough, I keep mine on coco fibre (the stuff you get in bricks) and some sphagnum moss to maintain some air pockets so I don't get anaerobic bacteria. If you want to get them going a bit more you can add decaying plant matter that doesn't have any chemicals on it; I have a little...

    New Setup

Ohhh nice! I wanna get a shelf going on, right now all my mantids are spread out on and around my desk in my bedroom lol

    Gongy communal

@Teamonger right? His colours are so pretty, all the others are pale brown/yellow so he really stands out!
