    Something and Nothing

Galinthias amoena  African Flower has shed successfully and seems to be the strongest of my nymphs as he will take on bugs which the others wont. It made me laugh when I was inspecting him through a magnifying glass and to my surprise and delight he jumped onto the glass which gave me a...

    Land of the Giants

It occurred to me that our entire universe could be contained in an enormous terrarium in the land of the super giants. If you ever see an index finger coming out of the sky, a billion miles long, then you know we're living in a jar,    just a thought..   :turned:

    Big Green

Out of the Mantids Ive encountered so far I think the one that causes me the most wonder, intrigue, fascination, excitement and is the most Adrenalin inducing of all has got to be the Giant Rainforest Mantis. Hierodula majuscula. Or often referred to as .. "That Big Green Thing".

    Moral Dilemma

Does a Praying Mantis get bored,   is it cruel to keep animals in containers, is it wrong to permanently murder insects for food, at what point does one life form become superior to another? when its higher up on the food chain?  I suppose eating chickens, pigs, sheep, cows and fish  raises the...

    Unpleasant Experience

I used to live in an upstairs flat which was above a shop and a guy moved in and started a fishing tackle business. I introduced myself and I thought he seemed ok and everything was fine for a while. It was a shared yard and as I had no front door I used to come in through the back. It was the...

    Feeder Insects

Hey all.   Ive been buying the minimum quantity of bait i.e locusts, crickets and mealworms and found that as Ive only 2 Mantids they werent getting through them all. I started housing the Locusts in an enclosure like Ive been doing with the PMs with cabbage added and found that they were living...

    Planted Terrarium

Hi Guys,   My main love in life is Horticulture and Orchids which is why I got the Hymenopus coronatus.  Im planning on creating a live tank with ferns, orchids and water movement. I know ponds can cause a drowning hazard for the Mantids. At the moment Ive got artificial flowers and leaves with...

    Success 2

Wow,   Monty the Hierodula majuscula has also successfully shed his exoskeleton,  the shocking thing was that hes grown a great big set of wings. I was expecting it but it was still a big surprise to see them fully formed.   Crikey !   as it says in my book,     they keep you jumping, don't they !!!
