    Abdomen folding over?

Okay, so my Chinese mantis decided to play a new trick on me. O.o After molting for the 4th time (I think), I found him hanging upsidedown, but his abdomen was hanging over him. I've fed him several flies and crickets since, and it still stays flopped over. If he walks upright, it'll come back...

    Dancing while eating?

Okay. ^_^ I knew they did that while hunting to blend in... I didn't know if it was the same thing while eating too ro not. (Oh, and I meant to put this in the food forum, not the health one... Sorry! ^_^ ;; )

How does a mantis know where the head of an insect is?

I just fed my chinese mantis a caterpiller, and she started by munching on what was closest... until the 'piller decided to chomp on her forearm! She took care of that problem (chewed on the 'piller's head for a bit), then went back to the part she had been eating. I guess it just depends on...

    Dancing while eating?

So, I know mantids like to "Sway" when they're hunting, but why do they sway or bob or "dance" while eating? My mom was observing one of my chinese mantids eating, and she said that she was moving around, kinda like she was dancing in place. I suggested, "She's happy?" :D Any ideas?

    Position of ooth for hatching

Hey, Rick? Would you mind if I used one of these pictures for a visual aid in a speech about mantids? Thanks! ^_^

Learn something new every day! ^_^

Yeah, i figured a day was enough to let 'em go. ^_^ I've kept some longer than that in the cage and had no more "late bloomers". *shrug* I guess they just wanted to be difficult.

Learn something new every day! ^_^

Hey, guys! I'm back. ^_^ Haven't been around much lately, but I've got more mantids, so I'm gonna hang around for a while again. On to the topic! I had a ooth hatch on Wednesday, (my 5th out of 20!) and it hatched out a fair number. (you know, around 200-300 or so) and I left it in the cage...

Mantid nymphs dying for 'no reason'

Okay, so I've heard several times on here in the past that mantid nymphs tend to die for no (apparent) reason. Is this true? Why may that be?

    Sick mantis?

Thanks... Yeah, i just got done burying her. I debated feeding the cricket to her, but i figured since it was such a big cricket, it was dying from old age. I should have known better... but I guess I learned from my mistake.

    Sick mantis?

I think I might have (accidentally) killed my Chinese mantis. My sole survivor. She's one molt from adulthood. I gave her a big cricket yesterday. I normally wouldn't have given it to her due to it's size, but it wasn't moving much so I figured it was probably dying and wouldn't be able to...

    Awsome Mantis Video

My parents actually recoarded the last half hour of it for me whenit was on the other night, and I personally thought it was hilarious how they had happy, innocent music for the bird/mouse, and "dangerous!!" type music for the mantis. ^_^ Like in a cartoon of sorts.

    Can they escape?

Yeah, I've had some problems with escapees. ^_^ I'm still finding little nymhs in my room. Thankfully, they haven't seem to have found the door yet. I use some tulle material over the top of my cage. I hot-glued it to the top fo the lid. The only problem with this is that they can still...

    Nymph not eating?

Hi, I had some chinese mantids hatch about 36 hours ago, and I put one alone in a vial approximately one and a half inch in diameter and three inches tall with a stick to climb on, and three fruit flies to eat. It's been well over 12 hours, and the little guy hasn't eaten a single one! Does it...

    mantids drying out when hatching?

Hi, i was watching my mantids hatch today, and over the course of 3 or 4 hours, only about 5 hatched fully. Several started 'worming' their way out, but never fully stretched out. Then I believe they dried up and died. Could this be because of a humidity problem? I misted the cage this...
