    BIG ootheca!

It's large, but not amazingly so. For a small mantis they lay surprisingly long (but skinny) ooths.

    Help with mealworms.

There's also no enclosure keeping mantises from going where they want to go. There's also no spray bottle giving them water. There's no keeper separating them so they don't cannibalize each other. There's no keeper placing couples in proximity to mate either. But there are predators that eat...

    What to feed mealworms?

I feed my mealworms that orange gel cricket food that provides both food, water, and vitamins. They seem to do great on that alone but I also throw in some crumbled up crackers or whatever as that's their more usual food.

    Mantis eats goldfish, again

I also should have mentioned this is a contingency plan in case a time comes when mealworms are unavailable. I like to keep things as simple and clean as possible. Meiji (John in Boston)

    Help with mealworms.

Rick, "poor food" in what way? I don't see why they would be nutritionally any better or worse than other insects. I agree that they are poor in regards to how appealing they are to mantises! Which brings me to my advise for the poster. My mantises eat lots of mealworms and it always starts...

    Sexing Arizona Unicorn

For some species I can tell just by looking, but not with my Arizona Unicorns. How many segments is each gender's abdomen? I have a sub-sub adult (over 1 inch long) I would like to sell and wish to sex it first. Thanks.

    Mantis eats goldfish, again

I am happy to learn that mantis don't find fishy taste displeasing. For a while I have been thinking of using tuffies (little feeder fish) as food food for larger mantises since crickets really do stink and I have housemates. Per some of the concerns raised here, when I do try this out I'll...

Selcective breeding: possible? ideal species and traits

One instance in which it should certainly possible to hybridize is when population groups are named as species because they don't actually come into natural contact with one another but the mantises in question are essentially conspecific (that's a fancy word meaning "the same species"). The...

    Orthodera Novaezealandiae nymphs..

Funny, I was just wondering the same thing. About 8 of my NZ's reached L3 and the rest "disappeared". Oops.

    Giant Shield Mantis

Being born black is the ant mantis' schtick ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant_mimicry ). That's what makes it antlike.

They do love to jump around. I have some that are L3 and they're still bouncy.

    Wikipedia: Orthodera novaezealandiae

I have changed the text and dropped in a note discussing U Michigan's inflated estimate. I think someone in Michigan was just forgetting NZ is metric and changed centemeters to inches. At any rate, the smaller size is part of the main text and the incorrect, larger size is only discussed in a...

    Wikipedia: Orthodera novaezealandiae

The info I used from the University of Michigan definately says inches but that may be wrong. Does everyone concur that the NZ's only grow about 1" long? A helpful clue is figuring out how long Orthodera ministralis grows as they're more-or-less conspecific.

Same species. Maybe it is supposed to say 3.5 - 4 cm? I'll check and try to figure it out. Get well soon.

Sure Rebecca, it's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthodera_novaezealandiae You could also type either "Orthodera novaezealandiae" or "New Zealand Mantis" into Wikipedia's search field and it will pop right up. John

    Kill of the day

I have some L3/L4-ish Sphodromantis centralis that have no problem tackling grasshoppers larger than they can handle and were doing exactly that at feeding time last night. When their prey is too big to lift, they just pin it down and sink their faces into the prey's neck like Dracula having a...
