    Mated female still calling

One of my ghost females has been mated for over a week and I've seen her calling a couple of times. Does this mean the mating was unsuccessful? They were connected for a couple hours.

    two ooths in two days?

my newly mated ghost mantis laid an ooth yesterday morning, and another one today. Both are normal sized and everything. Does this happen often?

    Woot!

Started breeding my ghost mantises last weekend. It took me a couple tries but eventually I got the first pair to mate, then a second pair shortly after. I mated a third pair the next day. So that's three down and three to go :D I plan on doing one or two more pairings today! I've recently...

    Free Chinese nymphs

Hey everyone, Mantidforum helped me so much when I was getting started in mantis keeping. I would like to give back to the community and help some other new members get started. I've recently had a ton of Chinese hatch out and want to give them away to good homes. New members get first dibs on...

    unexpected ooth explosion

So today started pretty normal. I woke up before classes and was admiring my new Gongy cage that I built last night. I was happy to see that 2 of my gongys molted into L5 and another was in the process. All of a sudden I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and noticed a mantis nymph...

    Nanowrimo anyone?

Anyone else out there doing the nanowrimo challenge this year. It's basically where you try to write a 50,000 word novel over the month of November. It's crazy fun and I succeeded in it last year. So, if you think it's cool check it out here. www.nanowrimo.org my username on there is JayKB if...

    Separating gongy sexes

Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've posted. I've been super busy with work and school. Anyhow, I've been keeping some gongys now for 3 or 4 weeks and they've grown from L2 to L4 and are getting pretty big. The other day one of the L4's ate the last of the L3's. The runt had been about...

    Brewing Mead

Hey guys, I stumbled upon a guy who might be the most interesting person on the interwebs. His website www.stormthecastle.com has tons of cool things on it ( nice to find someone with more hobbies than me ;) ) one of which was mead making. I love mead, so when I found outd it was so easy to...

Do Banana roaches count as flying food?

I was wondering if banana roaches could be fed to mantids that require flying food? From what I've read, the banana roaches are great fliers and are pretty small. Not to mention they're pretty enough to get past the EWW factor of my g/f and thus I would be allowed to keep them. What do you guys...

    Bad ooth placement

Just noticed that my Chinese laid an ooth. I was super excited until I realized that she somehow got between a stick that runs up and down the enclosure, and the side. The ooth is attatched to the stick, but the opposit side (front side) swelled up and stuck to the enclosure  So I...

    First ooth hatch!!

Unexpectedly, one of my Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii ooths that I got from Chase hatched! I've got a ton of little ant looking babies crawling around :) So happy! I couldn't believe it. I was attempting to breed one of my chinese pairs and I looked up and was like WOAH! Hope to get pics up...

    Mantisy love! Part Two

Couldn't help but post again. Got my Chinese mantises going at it tonight :) This one took a little bit more work and a little more pushing to get him to figure out what he was supposed to do. It was scary at first because he hopped on and she swiped back at him. He had jumped on backwards...

    Mantisy love!

Finally had my first mantis mating experience :) My two religiosa are having mantis sex right now! Woot for baby mantises in the spring! It's pretty awesome to succeed at mating them. I was so so nervous to put them together, but with a little shove in the right direction the male hopped right...

    squished a religiosa :(

So I was walking with my girlfriend at her college when she spotted a male religiosa sitting on some steps. I was super happy because I need a male for my female. Well the male had both of his raptoral arms missing, his thorax and head were all bent up and his antenna were basically destroyed...

    boxelder bugs?

Does anyone know if boxelder bugs Boisea trivittat are safe to feed to mantids? I've googled them but only come up with extermination websites. The reason I ask is their Red/Black coloring looks kind of ominous. It would be great if they're ok to feed though, because there's millions of them...

    Tiny new addition

Hey guys and gals, I was out "grasshopper wrangling" for my Chinese tonight and came across a new friend :) I saw movement, and was about to pounce on a large grasshopper when I realized it was a tiny mantis. She's a little European. I don't know if it's because I'm used to looking at the...
