Is There an Arthropod You DO NOT Like?

I don't like louse flies. They are really ugly and nasty guys. (additional to flies, ticks and lice already mentioned in this thread). Otherwise I like insects and spiders when they stay where they should be. well I would not let them run over my face or my food. D)

    adult Alalomantis sick?

thanks for your replies, massaman and ismart. I fed her a cricket today which she ate greedily. so as long as she eats and lets me handfeed her, I leave her alone. And I have her babies, they are L3 now. funnily the male I mated her with is still healthy and eating, I expected her to live...

    adult Alalomantis sick?

That she had with her last ooth, it was laid in 2 portions (but they looked like ooths) Ok update again: She laid 2 times more, without attaching the foam to anything. actually she pressed ooth foam into a thin, stringy mass which fell to the bottom of her enclosure. I took it out, and it...

    adult Alalomantis sick?

Update: she laid an ooth last night, but she did not attach it anywhere but dropped it. I have had mantids for some time now, but I never saw this before. Has such happened to anyone, and is anything wrong with this mantis? She acts normal but has still difficulties hanging with her 4 legs and...

    adult Alalomantis sick?

My Alalomantis female has been doing well for 3 months since molting to adult, and she has laid 5 oothecae. A few days ago I noticed she is hanging upside down ad supporting herself with the claws. Her abdomen hangs downwards (as if it were too heavy for her, but she has been fatter before layng...

all of a sudden not eating nearly as much...

My males eat every third day as adults, and they are lazy to go after food themselves. ;) Males need lesser food than females, obviously.

    Laundry basket enclosure

I have one and use it for mating, placing my small Ficus inside. did not find a place yet in my appartment for using it as a permanent enclosure. But it works well to prevent the males go hiding in my room after mating, I always leave them alone for mating duing the night. :)

    Look Ma, no hands

Sad to her of her passing. It is always different with those mantids who need our special care. But at least you could keep her alive for some weeks (or months) after she lost her arms.

    Unidentified Mantis.

It looks like a Budwing mantis nymph (Parasphendale sp) to me. But I don't know if they are found in Honduras, I thought they were from Africa. So it could be I am wrong.

    Male won't mate :/

Yes, it finally worked with my Alalomantis muta pair. 3 times during the last week I put the malebehind the female onto a ficus, and he just stared around and did not move. I ended up with putting them back into their enclosures. last night I tried again, and after shoving the male (a little, he...

    Mantis tragedy :(

I am sorry too, understand your loss ver well! My Giant asian female (one of 4) fell from my hands too to the floor of her enclosure, and she now has a wound at her abdomen. It happens so quickly one cannot react, she jumped away from my hand. Guess they are more clumsy when being so fat. Mine...

    What happened here?

sorry for your loss, Gex files. At first I thought our mantids (yours and mine) died to similar reasons. But mine clearly died to molting and exposing a huge open wound. Seems his eye wound hadn't healed since last molt. It all went too fast, and I just had come home to find him dead, so i did...

    What happened here?

I just had a similar experience. One of my Hierodulas started to molt to adult this evening. After a time he was still in the same position, and not out of his old skin completely. He could not pull out his forelegs. And there was a big blister-like thing where his eye should be. Against al...

    molt interval

ok, thank you for your replies. I will just wait and see. yesterday she ate a cricket again, but I will tell you when she finally molts. Or whatever happens with her and her siblings.

    molt interval

temp is constantly at 21°Celsius (which is ok for Giant asians), and as I wait for molting (also in the others) daily, I mist them 2-3 times a day. so that should not be the problem. 4 of my 11 mantids are adult since 24.2., the others (only the one is still L6, the others are subadult) make no...

    molt interval

Is it possible a nymph (L6) would not molt for 1 1/2 months? One of mine has last molted 11.1., but she is still eating and plump. Never had such a long time between molts. Can it be a mantis is so greedy, she forgets to stop eating before molting? Stupid question maybe, just wondering.

I can make red wine turn blue!

when I last spilled red wine on our carpet, I covered the spot with salt and let it dry a while. then rub it off, took away most of the stains. cool BTW, Deby , your experiment with colors. I could once turn a bluebell (flower) red when I put it on an anthill. It is the acid doing that. :)
