    Critters in my fly culture??

There's tiny white moving dots in my fruit fly culture... I've never seen anything like it before. They definitely aren't maggots.. usually maggots just squim in place, where these tiny things appear to be moving around, rather speedily. They are about 1/5 of a pinhead. Shape is roughly...

(UPDATED WITH PICS!!)New to MantidForum.com (Many Questions)

Clobro, you've come to the right place. Being a fellow Canuck, I'll hazard a guess that you've got a Tenodera Sinensis: Chinese Mantis - Common in central Canada. You've done well so far. Keep feeding your little friend a varied diet. Take it out for a walk once in a while, but don't...

    Fruit fly medium

Medium is the singular of media, however, I think the two terms are largely interchangeable.

    Fruit fly medium

This was intended to be a reply to another thread, not a new thread. Whoops.

    Fruit fly medium

Dehydrated Mashed potato flakes. AFAICT, commercial preparations are simply dehydrated potatoes with a mold inhibitor and dye so you don't accidentally eat it.

    Good shipping practices.

I am of the mindset that mantids should *always* be shipped via overnight shipping, however, I've noticed that not all believe that. I also believe Ooths should also be shipped via a faster-than normal method, just in case. It seems irresponsible to me to ship any living thing via standard...

Do we put mantis to "sleep"?

I had a Wahlberghi that was losing a foreleg to rot, and also wondered about euthenasia. I did some reasearch into bugs and pain, and found that the nervous system of insects is too primitive too allow them to feel pain the way we do. For the most part, they don't feel pain, only vague...

    Dylan Dobell (Very Negative)

Late this morning, I received Dylan's replacement package. I wasn't expecting it, due to the fact that he never sent me the tracking number, as discussed. In it were two healthy mendicas .... And an Ooth which I wasn't expecting. I guess giving me one of his surplus budwing Ooths was...

    Dylan Dobell (Very Negative)

Two weeks ago, I ordered a B. Mendica from Dylan. It's been a gong show of frustration, bad customer service, lies, and wasted time. Problems: 1) Shipping gouging and disorganization: Despite me specifically asking for expresspost shipping, receiving a quote for expresspost from Dylan...

Recieved mantids today, having trouble getting them to eat

I completely believe that women's pantyhose are the best possible mantid lids. Keeps in the critters, no matter how small, but still breathes. Don't waste cash on full leggings, but instead just buy a bulk pack of the "stocking-socks". Mantids may take a few hours to build up comfort to...

Putting a pet dog in a mantis cage can increase humidity, particularly if it has recently gone for a swim.

    Do you name your mantids?

If I have "favorite" mantids, I name them. Wahlberghi names: ---------------------- butterfingers, pegasus, amigo, popeye, "The Jackson 5" (Because they "Lighten" as they get older :-) ) Tenodera names: --------------------- Timmeh, Vantis. What names have you given your mantids?

    Alex P of www.phasmidsincyberspace.com: Good Breeder/Seller

Alex shipped promptly, and the mantids were very well packed. All of the mantids purchased artrived in good health. He is straight up, and easy to deal with. I do recommend him, and will do business with him again.

    Using Sticks from outside?

Conventional wisdom says not to contaminate your mantis enclosure with sticks from outside. What if they are microwaved for 30 seconds first? Would that not kill any potention parasites/mites/critters, and their eggs thus making it safe to put the stick in with your bug? I'd like to hear...

    Angry Mantis

Although a mantis doesn't really pose any threat to a person, they can definitely harm your eyes if you hold them too close. They are attracted to eye movement, and will reflexively strike. It's not a big deal if you wear glasses, but if you don't, be very careful. Aside from eyes, I've...

    Angry Mantis

Hi Jackson, I'm with you on that. The Tenodera are vicious little buggers. Perhaps I had a bad experience, but I found their agression a bit unnerving.

    Cloves, Cinnamon, and mantids.

I'm using cloves and cinnamon in my house as pest repellent, but am concerned about the effect this will have upon mantids. Granted, mantids travel high, while the spices are on my floor, but my house air smells like cloves. Will this stress them?
