Six species native to the US?

I read somewhere there are six mantid species native to the us...I know three of them- European Mantis, Chinese, and Carolina Mantis, right? But what are the other three? Thanks!

I lost my one and only praying mantis yesterday :(

Thank you everybody for understanding- I think it's probably partiuculary hard to let go of your first mantis. I agree, I think next time I may try something different than a chinese. I'm thinking maybe a ghost, giant sheild, or a european. I hope I have better luck with them :)

I lost my one and only praying mantis yesterday :(

It started with an ootheca purchesed at our local gardening store. A few weeks later, out came 150+ tiny praying mantids. We let most of them go, keeping but two (the second one died when she was very young). I raised my praying mantid normally; it turned out to be a male. I quickly found out he...

My mantis just molted to have his full set of wings...

Hmm... the carolina mantid doensn't look right, although that probably is closer to his size. I'm pretty sure he is a chinese, just a very small crippled one :( In fact, he wings dried all crumpled- probably because he fell during molting. He always does because of his legs, and I have to help...

My mantis just molted to have his full set of wings...

Does that mean his is now an adult? Or at least I think they are his full wings- they cover his whole body and are thin and green. Will he ever molt again? The thing is, he's a chinese mantid, but he's not very big, maybe 2 1/2 inches to 3 inches, and I thought mantids get bigger. If he isn't...

    Giant Sheild Mantis: lifespan?

Do these mantids live longer than usual? I just read this off mantis place and it sparked my attention: 'A long lived large mantis. Growth is around 4". A beautiful green mantis with a large appetite. They are docile and easily will walk around on you and feed right next to you while you are...

    Help- mantid has mis-molt!

I found my praying mantis attached to a stick, newly molted, with his skin completally hanging off one foot. He couldn't push it off because his other back leg was curled up over his back- very deformed. I finally decided to help him, and succeeded in quickly pulling it off without harming him...

How many times do they molt?

Okay, thanks! I do think I want to try breeding them but I *think* that I have at least one female, who is only L2, so I should be good.
  14. M

How many times do they molt?

Okay. And they are both boys, so they won't get as big, right?
  15. M

How many times do they molt?

How many molts until adulthood for chinese mantids? I think mine may be around L5. L6 at the most, L4 at the least. It's hard to keep track, they molt so often! But they are only a little over an inch long....they're big, fat, and healthy, and get a ton to eat, but I thought they only molted...

Found a spider and her egg case

Hmm...yeah, maybe she's just a rare variety. I've never seen one like her, though. I"ll try to get a picture up soon to clear it up. So should I try to feed Her? Can she catch them without a web? Will will the babies hatch?

Found a spider and her egg case

No, I'm positive it's not a wolf spider. Her body is way to big and circular, and we have tons of wolf spiders here- I could go catch one and compare them, but I'm sure she's not. 100% positive. And it said with the picture that it was a grass spider. Although I'm still not quite sure that what...

Found a spider and her egg case

So...she doesn't need a web to catch her food? I think I might know what she is...she looks just like this picture: I think maybe it's a Grass Spider?

Found a spider and her egg case

:) So...how do I feed it? It was under some cardboard, and had a little nest in the dirt- no web. Does it need to eat (dumb question). Is it attached to the eggs? How do I care for it? I'd love to keep the eggs and have them hatch.
