I lost my one and only praying mantis yesterday :(

It started with an ootheca purchesed at our local gardening store. A few weeks later, out came 150+ tiny praying mantids. We let most of them go, keeping but two (the second one died when she was very young). I raised my praying mantid normally; it turned out to be a male. I quickly found out he...

My mantis just molted to have his full set of wings...

Does that mean his is now an adult? Or at least I think they are his full wings- they cover his whole body and are thin and green. Will he ever molt again? The thing is, he's a chinese mantid, but he's not very big, maybe 2 1/2 inches to 3 inches, and I thought mantids get bigger. If he isn't...

    Giant Sheild Mantis: lifespan?

Do these mantids live longer than usual? I just read this off mantis place and it sparked my attention: 'A long lived large mantis. Growth is around 4". A beautiful green mantis with a large appetite. They are docile and easily will walk around on you and feed right next to you while you are...

    Help- mantid has mis-molt!

I found my praying mantis attached to a stick, newly molted, with his skin completally hanging off one foot. He couldn't push it off because his other back leg was curled up over his back- very deformed. I finally decided to help him, and succeeded in quickly pulling it off without harming him...

How many times do they molt?

How many molts until adulthood for chinese mantids? I think mine may be around L5. L6 at the most, L4 at the least. It's hard to keep track, they molt so often! But they are only a little over an inch long....they're big, fat, and healthy, and get a ton to eat, but I thought they only molted...

Found a spider and her egg case

It a medium brownish spider under some cardboard that is attached (or holding on to, which one is it?) a white circular thing, which I assume is it's egg case. Will it hatch? If so, when? What should I do to care for the spider/egg case?

My Chinese Mantid molted for the first time last night!

Woot! I'm glad it was a sucess- I was worried something would happen! He looks SO much bigger, it's amazing! He's very hungry this morning. So now he would be a L2 Chinese Mantis? Is that right? What does the 'L' stand for? How many days until his next molt, and how many will he have? Thanks!

    When will the ooth hatch?

I bought two chinese mantid ootheca's...one hatched about two weeks ago, and the other is yet to hatch! Is it dead? Is there a way to tell? It looks normal. It did say it would take two to six weeks. I think it's been about 3 or 4 weeks. Is this normal? Thanks!

    Breeding Chinese Mantids- tips?

I have two chinese mantids, and although I think they are both males, I have another ootheca, that should hatch soon, and I am hoping to get a female out of it. They are all nymphs right now, but I'm just wanting to learn about how to do it. I'm mostly worried about the female eating/injuring...

    What color will they be?

I have two what I think are chinese mantids. I know they vary in color when adults. Both the mantids are brown- will they keep that color in adulthood? Or will they change to more green or some other color? If they do change color, when will it happen? Thanks!

    Feeding mosquitoes to nymphs?

Hi, I'm a complete newbie here, and just a few days ago I hatched what I beleive to be a Chinese Mantis egg case. I let most go, but am keeping two (seprate), and I had a feeding question...are mosqitoes okay to feed them? I haven't been able to find my answer anywhere else. Other things we...
