    Post your "fail" shots!

For every beautiful mantid shot I get, there are at least 5 "fail" shots  . Some of these fail shots are almost perfect, and some of them are outright hilarious! I would love to see everybody's fail shots! For some reason, my camera loves focusing on my mantids' behinds... would have...

    Cameras/photography

I know a lot of people here are into photography and take lots of photos! So just curious about what you use, what you don't suggest, etc. I recently purchased a canon digital rebel xt ef-s 18-55 mm. I got an f/3.5-5.6 lens for the old model. I felt like I was ready to move on from my bridge...

My Hardest yet Best Challenge Yet

I joined the mantis hobby a little over 2 years ago (December 16, 2016 is when I joined the forum). I started out with a ghost mantis and two little african mantids, which have since molted to adult and passed away. I had T. sinensis next, and my mantid collection exploded. I had budwings, r...

Why are my double shields all girls?

I swear, every time I get double shields, there are way more girls than boys! Does anybody know what's up with that? I mean, I'm not complaining!  :P

    Failed free-range housing project

Story Time: I was working on a project to move all of my adult mantises onto houseplants in various locations in my house. I was going to post about it when it was done... but, unfortunately, the results were unexpected and disheartening. I had three adult female ghost mantises, an African...

    Oothbound for months!

My p. agrionina has never laid an ooth since she molted to adult many (five?)months ago. She seems to be acting fine! Still eating, drinking droplets, and climbing around, but she is quite the fat mantis. I've tried putting her on plants free in the house, putting sticks of all sizes and shapes...

    Something killed all my mantises

The title is pretty self-explanatory. Something killed most of my mantises.  I was feeding them wax worms and flies with the very occasional (gut loaded) mealworm. No crickets. Then, they all started dropping. The little nymphs first. They would refuse food, have a large abdomen, vomit foul...

    First Old World Ts Coming

I'm getting the danger spider: the OBT. :)  Also, getting an Indian Ornamental Pokie. They're going to be relatively small, the OBT is a 1/2" sling and the Pokie is 2". The Pokie'll be my first arboreal, too. I'm excited and nervous! Anybody have experience with these species? I'd love to hear...

I don't know what to think

So, I overzealously sprayed one of my ghost nymphs. She got caught in a drop and was trapped on the floor for an unknown amount of time, partially submerged. I freed her and she perked up and started crawling and cleaned up her legs and seems to be acting relatively normal. Should I be worried...

    My first ooth!!

I posted this somewhere else, but I'm very excited about this. It's my (and her ;) ) first ooth! Unfortunately it's infertile. Amazing what these creatures do.

How did YOU get into mantids?

How did you all get into mantids? I'm curious how everybody found these amazing pets and got addicted to them! ;) For me, I was fooling around on the internet when I discovered that you could actually order bugs online. I had always been a bug person, having caught and kept black widows and...

    Blueish mantis!

I wish the photos were better so that you guys could see the blue tinted nature of her whole body, but these will have to do. She had her last few molts in a container with a blue lid and is a blue and purple tinted mantis! That makes me interested in experimenting with keeping mantises in...

    Paralyzed mantis?

I got home to the sight of my adult male ghost, named Hannibal, curled on the floor of his enclosure. Figuring he was dead, I picked him up to investigate the body and when I started to pull the wings apart, he grabbed my finger with his raptors. And that's about all he can move besides one...

    Leptomentella care?

So, I recently ordered some nymphs and accidentally ordered a species I thought was a different species... oops.   But anyway, it's a leptomentella and it's the smallest mantis I've ever seen. Does anybody know how to take care of these? Thanks!! Edit: I realized I was spelling the...
