    Waxworm pupa turning black?

I've had a few that went tan and then very dark, almost black, and they then hatched into moths - the moths were very dark grey so that might be why the pupae go black(?!?!) Good eating for my mantids!

    Froglet?

It's froglet season at the moment, so a couple of questions really, if they're not too big can you feed one to a mantis? is it safe? and how do people generally feel about using 'cute' creatures as feeders, my daughter has said that there is no way we can feed ours butterflies! (Moths are fine...

    New additions

I had so much spare food that I didn't want to go to waste I thought I'd better get a couple more mantids! (That's how I explained it to my missus anyway  ;) ). The first pic is of my first giant Asian "Gandhi" stalking a cricket (still not 100% of exact type - H. membranacea, or grandis maybe...

2nd molt in 2 weeks - is this normal?

Hi, My giant Asian has molted for the second time in two weeks, all limbs where they should be,  it was quite a surprise! Is this normal? I thought it would be a while longer between molts.  She looks massive now and has just tackled her first 'big' food - a housefly that I caught - and tackled...

    Mesh suitable for tank?

I bought a new tank today, quite a small one (I've put a photo to show size, I've got some sterilised sticks drying out waiting to go in), my mantis is getting too big for the critter tub but still far too small for my other tank.  The new one seems ideal, it only cost 3 pounds, but the...

    First molt

Just when in to check on my little green lady and freaked! I thought she was dead, hanging upside down completely still and her (previously plump) abdomen was flat, upon closer inspection I could see she is molting.  I feel nervous now! There are 3 fruit flies in with her and I can't get them...

    Advice on feeding nymphs

That's great thanks, I've been putting one in at a time, so would it be best to put a few in and just keep an eye on her?

    Advice on feeding nymphs

    First handling experience!

I have just had my first handling experience! Wow! I opened her (his?) critter box yesterday and she hid inside and seemed really scared so I left it open for a while and then put the top back on and left her to it. I did the same today and she climbed right out but was not too sure of me at...

Hello, I've a lot to learn!

Hi,  I have just got my first mantis, hierodula grandis, it's about 3/4 inch long and still living in a critter box - I have a larger tub for it when it's bigger!  I live in Wakefield in Yorkshire (England), and am looking forward to increasing my knowledge about these fascinating creatures :)
