I'm not even going to click the link, though I'm sure it would be fairly interesting.

What's always more interesting to me is perspective. For example, if you walk to a random person on the street and ask them to describe a mantis, they will give you pathetic description. If you ask them to name a species, they will fail. If you ask them to name five species, they will think you are crazy.

I would guess that the people in the general population that are targetted for that media trap have never heard of a substantial portion of the bugs in it and that both they and the author have a very limited awareness of (or interest in) how many bugs are really out there.

No mainstream media list, especially one that apparently lists 2 mantises as disturbing, is going to have the first clue about what lurks out there in the darkness.

Now I've got myself all worked up and have to click the link. Hopefully it is very quick.

Yep, just as I suspected (though quicker). Some shameless or shameful author spent 20 minutes scouring the web to put together yet another sensational story for a website that thrives on this junk. They get lots of hits on that page of the site because the mainstream likes to eat three square meals of dung per day.

I'm sorry you were disappointed Peter. Although I do MOST DEFINITELY agree with most of what you wrote, I rather enjoyed looking at the insects. Some very interesting bugs on there, even though they were horribly jaded and misinformed. I have found myself defending my bugs against the forces of preconceptions with my friends on a daily basis, also known as "the good fight". :D

I do the same thing! (Well, except I probably give up sooner!) The thing is, though: They won't "get it" if they just aren't interested in 'bugs'. That's why I hang out here on this forum so much now...I feel more "accepted". :D

While the bugs were cool, I would be hard pressed to consider this list as anywhere near the 10 coolest. But 10 most disturbing isn't close either.

Maybe....

"10 interesting bugs I found out about while doing as little research as possible."

???
