Are you positive that it's a S. californica and not S. limbata? Hard to tell from the photo, but I don't see the dark banding on her abdomen. Though the photo is black and white, it looks like the wings have the wavy yellow pattern, which makes her a limbata. I'm no expert though, perhaps someone else can chime in. Do you have a color photo?

If the wings are yellow then it is a S. limbata. Limbatas are very common in Southern Cal.
