I think I know what people mean when they say a 3rd instar or when it's L4 but i'm not 100% sure. Someone tell me what it means.

 
Instar means the stage at which the nymph is.

2nd instar/L2 nymph has moulted once.

1st instar/L1 nymph has not moulted i.e. it is a hatchling.

Er, the mantis becomes L6. :rolleyes:

That's usually subadult stage for females and adult stage for males ... I think there may be an L7 or L8 though. I don't usually count my instars.

That's what I thought, so what happens after L5 or 5th instar?
5th - 6th - 7th - 8th instar i think :unsure: ..i keep forgetting cause my brains like i sieve i think females shed either 7 or 8 times and males shed 6 or 7,,i cant remember..im sure someone will correct me in a bit.Do your self a favour and go to the link i gave u and read the hole thread

It depends on the species and is 3 up to 12 larval stages before becomeing adult.
