hi again just a question concerning the breeding of mantids, do the male and female have to be un-related or does it depend on the species or does it not matter.

doesnt matter for the most part. i would imagine most of us just breed the stock we raise.

tyvm for the answer geoff, thought it better that i know now rather than find out the hard way by doing something wrong.concerning my chinese ootheca, this was purchased from ebay so i have no idea how it would have looked like prior to it being sent to me.looking at it as it hangs, the twig is vertically hung and there is a seam along the outside ov the twig.it seams to be a pear shaped ooth with the narrow end to the top just like a pear would hang in a tree.i hope this is the right way up ;)

Inbreeding will negatively affect any species but some more than others. If you breed a line of one species long term then it's always worthwhile introducing new blood periodically.

Huw

You said there was a seam right? Have the seam face down (facing the bottom of your container). Have the seam run horizontal. Vertical is possible, but its easier if you do it horizontal. Tie both ends of the stick with some string or something, and tie it to the top of your container.

P.S. pics would help alot.

hi there ty all 4 the answers , can only upload 3 pics at a time file too large. hope these hlp alittle :)

what i have done as there are 2 ends to the stick, ive treaded cotton through both ends and fixed it that way.ive done it so its kinda tilting with the narrow end facing closer to the top as though it were a branch in a tree.the fat end of the ooth is now at the bottom end i.e closer to the bottom. ive just taken photos to show you but the dam battery on my camera has died so cannot do a thing till its charged lol. but im sure from those 3 pics you can kinda understand what i mean. i hope so anyway lol.

ok i think i go it sussed i hope u can see now n i hope this is correct
I can see it, but where is the thread hanging down from? It seems right, is that the only ooth you have?

Also, is it hanging from the side of the container, or the top? I suggest you hang it from the top, depending on how large your container is. If no one else can help you, post another pic from a different angle. ;)

the ooth is hanging from the top i have some mesh on the top its tied through that. its attached through both sides of the stick.

i do have another 3 ooths, 1 more chinese,1 european & 1 narrow winged. my nxt issue is gona be with the european & narrow winged ooths at they are completly different shaped.ive seen many photo where these type of ooths are layed on the side of the brached so am thinking maybe use heat gun to remount them that way, i dont know until i have recieved them.

The Chinese are perfect. the other too shouldn't be too hard. Almost all ooths have the "seam" where they come out, and as long as you have that free, with space for the nymphs to hatch, you'll be fine. Europeans aren't hard (I have one ooth incubating right now). If you do have trouble, let us know.
