So, one of my Hierodula girls developed a dark blemish on her eye that I've seen a couple times on this forum before. I only noticed it two-three days ago, and it was pretty small. It didn't grow bigger over the next day or two. I figured that it's probably not an infection, and since she was pre-sub, a molt would fix it right up. I was proven incorrect when she molted during the middle of last night, and that blemish appears to have simply grown in size with her.

It looks worse than it probably is, as she doesn't seem troubled by it in the least.
It looks like erosion damage--even on the shed skin, this spot on the eye appears as a sanded down/smoothly flattened, brown spot on the eye's curved surface.
On her actual eye itself it--well--looks rather rough, as seen in these photos.
It's worth noting that the second eye appears to have a shade of similar physicality--both on the shed skin, and on her eye currently; though it's much less severe and harder to see.

I guess I can assume that this won't fix itself in her molt to adulthood, will it? Haha. It seems like it goes quite deep...

So long as it doesn't affect her ability to see and hunt, I'm not terribly worried. She doesn't seem bothered by it. Am I right to think that this is mostly just cosmetic damage?
Poor girl, I gotta buy her an eyepatch for when she goes out on coffee dates, now...

I've read that spots such as those can be caused due to rubbing. I've had a couple of my hierodula girls get similar spots after I procrastinated in upgrading their enclosure size, which means they may have rubbed against the mesh up top. It didn't affect them in any way I could notice though.

Ah; I see! I am glad it didn't cause too much issue for your girls, it's good news for mine then!

Terrarium size definitely isn't the issue for Cheuun here. She's got a whole ten gallon space to herself 8]

I may just have to place her Terrarium in a space where outside stimuli is less...

Yeah some people say it comes from rubbing on the enclosure surfaces. That sounds like a reasonable explanation but hard to say what it really is.

this happens with T sinensis frequently, it is indeed caused by the mantid rubbing its face on the side when it tries to walk through the wall.

Oh my ! What a terrific photograph! Hope you shot this in hi rez. Think it would be a great submission to Tammy for the 2015 calendar.

Thanks, guys!! It's good to have the reassurance that this is nothing detrimental. Much appreciated!!

Digger, dang, thanks bro!! <3

Unfortunately, I snapped it with my camera phone haha!
I can't afford a real camera just yet ; u; But I'm workin' towards it!!
