Hi Everyone,
I have some adult Taiwan Flower Mantises, actually 4 females and one male. This is the first time I've ever kept insects from small nymphs through adulthood, and so these are the first mantis matings I've ever witnessed. I have a plastic vine that hangs above my desk near the windows in my study, I put my mantises there while I clean their enclosures, and sometimes I just let them hang out there. Last night I fell asleep before putting them back, so they all stayed on the vine all night. I woke up this morning to see the male mounting my largest female, while a female he mated with earlier watched, along with a nymph wide-arm mantis:
I know insect sex is not laced with human sexual mores, I just thought it was funny and that I would post. I like this vine situation because it allows the male to choose his lady. It's interesting that he chose the two females who had had bad molts before he had this encounter with my largest, healthiest adult female. It may be coincidence, or there may be mantis reason behind it. This species matures quickly, it seems like last month that they were tiny.
