It was feeding time, but this male Hymenopus coronatus would not let go of the female he was on. The waiter brought the female a meal--a nice, large roach--and noticed the male's palps moving... and then watched as he slowly began taking careful steps up the female's thorax. Seeing that the male was hungry, the waiter offered him a fly that was quickly taken.

Time passed, and the little male began to notice that the female was practically inhaling her roach and began to think about what might happen should she be finished with her meal before he was.

Despite quickly eating as much as he could, he just could not manage to finish his meal before the female, so he quickly dropped and flicked away the uneaten portion of his fly: the juicy abdomen. His female counterpart, still hungry, picked up his uneaten meal while he watched with fear, unable to think of a way to escape without drawing the attention of her hungry eyes.

The fly abdomen was juicy, but small. She quickly devoured every last bit of it--leaving him in a very precarious situation. Noticing his plight, their waiter decided to intervene by providing her with yet another juicy roach. Seeing his chance to escape as she grabbed her meal--a roach nearly double his size--he quickly jumped off her back and rolled a safe distance away.

Bravo! Great photos and story. The waiter's timing was impeccable! Hope the male H. coronatus left a generous tip.
