Hello,

For months now my daughter and I have been raising 4 orchid mantises. Now we have two subadult females who are super healthy. But we've had very bad luck with both males. Both have had bad molts. Here is a picture of our last male. He is still alive, it doesn't look like he'll recover however. He was stuck in his skin for over a day:

So we have no male. But maybe you do. Here are the bachelorettes...

Here is one of the females, she is fine, her name is Mei:

This is Mei Jr., she is more pink:

I would recommend you do not purchase males until after your females are both mature for a month.
Normally i would agree, but i have no intention of charging her. I figure being i have no females even close to maturing. I rather not let them just waste away. There is also no guarentee her females will even make it to adult, or my males will last long enough to mate. I figure it's at least worth a try.

I've said it before; I'll say it again, a scholar and a gentleman! :D

Carol, I was very happy and relieved when I saw Paul had PM'd you! He won't take advantage of you, and I knew he would offer you a good deal. :D In the future, you might be a little more cautious about advertising your desperation to the extent of being willing to pay so much for a particular mantis. Most people here who are well known members, as I'm sure there are others who might not be so well known, are fair and trustworthy people who won't rip you off. But there are those few bad apples out there who might see something like that and try to take advantage of you, especially since they know you want a something in particular very badly. And for those few, it doesn't even matter if they have it or not... they will pounce on you like a nymph on a fruit fly, with honey-laden promises they have no intention of keeping. Or they will just charge you an arm and a leg, making a big profit, because they know they can. Just be careful... OK? ;) :)

Aw, you guys are all so awesome. You're probably right Katnapper. I think I posted in haste. I was so upset from having lost my male that perhaps I was too transparent. Last night my oldest female molted and I see that she does not have her wings yet. So it seems I was incorrect about the when she would be mature. I'll need to wait a bit before I acquire gentleman company of my ladies. I think it says something about the goodness of people though that I have only received messages from reputable board members, none of whom has taken me up on my hasty offer of $100 dollars or more for a male orchid. My inexperience is really showing here, because I was shocked to see that Mei had molted and still had her wing buds. I had no idea the females got so large. Thank you all for your advice and cautions. You have helped me so much!

Carol, now would be a good time to try and purchase some L3 or L4 males. You might be able to get some from MantisPlace. I think she still has some for sale. If you like, you could PM me when your females mature. I just bought 10 L3 nymphs. If i have any extra males, i will gladly send them to you. Just let me know in the future. My adult males are already a month old as adults. They probally would not make it in time for your females anyway. Good luck, and keep in touch.

-Paul

I thought I would update this post. Since Mei since matured I ordered a male from Mantis Place, and they got together very quickly...

I thought he'd be afraid of her, because she's huge compared to him. But I guess not. This is my first time mating orchids. Mei had been acting strange, I think she was releasing pheromones. She seems happy now.
