Okay well the two seperated a few minutes ago and I noticed a whitish glob on the female's leg which she ate right away. What was that? Is about 4 hours sufficient for them to mate? If the female rejected a spermetaphore, are there still some in her? What happened to one of the male's eyes, it's blackish and has a teeny bit of fluid coming out of it? If the female did reject the spermetaphore, when would a male want to mate with her again? Should I introduce another male next week to be sure she took all the sperm?

The spermatophore (sac that holds the sperm) Is about 4 hours sufficient for them to mate? Yes. If the female rejected a spermetaphore, are there still some in her? Maybe, we cannot know. What happened to one of the male's eyes, it's blackish and has a teeny bit of fluid coming out of it? Maybe the female scratched it during mating. If the female did reject the spermetaphore, when would a male want to mate with her again? Whenever he appears interested. Should I introduce another male next week to be sure she took all the sperm? Can't hurt... except you always risk losing the male to cannibalism each time you mate them.

well here's the thing, the male disconnected and stayed on her for 10 minutes afterwards, he may have released another one that landed on her leg, but it seemed way to big to fit in the male. Does the female discard the empty sac (could she have just let go of an empty sac and is still holding the sperm from it?) because grasshopper females eat the sperm sac after all the sperm is in her.

No. Did could the male have released another spermetaphore on her leg by accident? Does the female get rid of the empty sac? I know that a female grasshopper absorbs the sperm from the spermetaphore then eats the empty spermetaphore. Do mantids do that? Because she ate that sac thingy. And it looked too big to be a sac from the male.
