i just wanted to know if using the air conditioner is harmful to mantises as it is getting pretty hot outside now and i am considering using the air conditioner now to keep my apartment from getting too hot if i keep the settings at a low to medium cool settings or such?

i use a room air conditioner all the time(seeing as im cold blooded myself) and no mantis deaths, if its on 24-7 i would suggest a heat lamp to keep them a lil warm lol

well i keep them all by my computer desk and no room on it for a heat lamp so going to just try it and cross my fingers!

I'd say it has to depend entirely on the species and that species' temperature and humidity requirements. If it's a high-temp species you could wind up freezing them by running AC without a heat lamp.

I don't think the temperature will do more than slow the metabolism down unless you have a really sensitive species. I would be concerned about the humidity that the air conditioner removes from the air.

I set my temps to my comfort, not the mantids. I keep them in the same room as my computers which makes the room warm. I also have them on a shelf directly above my uromastyx so they get the excess heat rising off of his heat lamps.

i also have my dog in my apartment so when it shows 90 degrees or close to it on the thermostat i have to take precautions so my dog and me dont end up getting sick cause of the high temperatures and thats why i am using my air conditioner as i will just keep it on till the thermostat goes down to 70 degrees or so and then turn off conditioner and just use my windows and my ceiling fan till i have to use the air conditioner again! Also I do not own a heat lamp so i just make do with what i have! The species i do have are 2 gemmatus creobroter females and a male and 8 gemmatus spotted eye flower mantus nymphs and one chinese mantis ooth and a religiosa mantis ooth! But i think those 2 species can handle temps down to 60 degrees at least and thats what i have had before with no problems!

mmm I live in a tropical place and from what I read on a book of vivarium fans they should feel at least 8 hours a day of a colder-than-average temp. I dont know what species of mantis you have, but I have s. Lineola and P. Peruviana and they are oposites, lineolas are a bit tropical and peruvianas are from almost desserts, still the night ANYWHERE gets cooler than average... (plus, I have them in my room and I cant sleep when its over 26 degrees at night, I need my room to be "colder" so I turn on the air conditioner at 22-24C and they are getting huge and hyper active :) BUT 2 days ago my retard brother slept in my room and turn the air conitioner to 18 degrees and 5 of the 9 peruvianas died that night.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. If you have a thermostat, why don't you set it to the maximum temperature that you can stand, turn on the AC and it will control the temperature automatically, no?

well i dont want to turn on my furnace LOL its part of the thermostat if i turn it on it will get quite warm and i dont need to that in the summer or fall but i only use the furnace in the winter and if i set the thermostat like over 60 or 70 then it will kick on the furnace and dont think i need that LOL or a energy bill ! I mean the furnace wont kick on unless i up the thermostat so if i dont mess with it more then i have to and i can have the temp at 70 without the furnace running if its natural tempature.
