I sexed this rhombodera stalii as a male at L5 but now at L7 I think I was wrong. There is one more segment right after the legs that doesn't really show in the photos. Just looking at the last segment it looks female. Sorry I'm so lame at this and thanks for your help.

It seems like this species is difficult to sex before L5 by just counting segments, because before L5, they will all seem to be males. After my stalli's matured to L5, I discovered I actually have 5 males and 1 female instead of 6 males. The last two segments on the female seemed to have fused together.

Some species are just harder to sex by counting segments because the "last" segment on the females is not a last segment. Mantids of both sexes are born with the same number of segments, but as females mature the number of segments appears to decrease as the sixth segment begins to cover the last two segments. These last two segments become more and more modified with each molt as they change in structure to become part of the ovipositor, which is eventually hidden by the "last" segment. Some species develop their reproductive structures earlier and some develop them later, so it's sometimes necessary to be patient and wait for them to develop sufficiently before you can be sure of their sex.

Clearly a female. The last segment is large. Those large species are the easiest to sex.

Is she sub or pre sub now?
Pre-sub. One of my 2 males molted to pre-sub also but one of his hind legs is wonky. It doesn't bend at the "knee" and he does use it. Hopefully it corrects next molt and/or the other male has a normal molt.
