I decided to take two shots during a quick shoot of a jumping spider that could be possibly stacked if I ever grew the courage to try it

Well as soon as I was done I ended up getting straight to it and here are my first results! This shot isn't very good in its own right, but it still is very significant to me. This opens up a whole new realm :D This is two jpegs (shoot RAW +) quickly thrown together with a quick run through in gimp. Total time = 3 min. im sure the RAW processed shots will come out much better but I could not wait :)

Well your in luck, I took a quick video before dinner because I got a lot of questions about my setup on other forums. YES I KNOW I NEED A HAIR CUT! YES I KNOW ITS REAR ELEMENT NOT FRONT! YES I KNOW IM WEARING A LAME FENDER SHIRT DESPITE THE FACT THAT I LIKE GIBSON MUCH MORE!

(it was shot indoors so I wouldn't loose the little guy attempting focus stacking for the very first time.)

Well I guess the vid helped a bit, I think the biggest problems for me are the lens and lighting. I guess I'll look into that for the future. Thanks.

BTW, there is nothing wrong w/ fender ;) . (Even though I play BC Rich and Schecter :p )

Oh when you say rear element, is that uh, lighting? I have no clue what any camera/photography terminology means...?

I do not like the ergonomics of fender guitars personally... but hey thats just me ;)

By rear element I mean the glass on the lense in the back.

Lighting in macro is the trickiest thing to master. It takes endless trial and error

Of course Gibson will be superior in shape, design, sound, and feel, ergo it is more expensive. But ergonomics don't bother me personally, you're talking to a dude w/ a Warlock haha. You have an Epiphone correct?

Anyway, as for cameras i need to figure out what some good macro lenses are for the cam I have... I have a Nikon D60, so I'm pretty sure my options are wide? (You'll have to correct me)

I'll definitely be experimenting w/ more lighting techniques. Thanks dude.

BTW I looked at some other stuff on your flickr...That is gold dude. Just amazing.

Yeah I have an epiphone ULTRA, with everything removable changed to gibson except the rythem humbucker. All my money has gone to camera gear sadly ;) Ewwww warlock :p

Not sure, because IIRC nikon's lower bodies need AF-S lenses to autofocus. I would look into getting a third party macro lens i.e. sigma/tamron though for best price/performance if it will work with the D60.

THanks btw!

Ha Ha! With all this talk about haircuts and guitars, did no one notice the "impossible" depth of field of this pic? This is due to Tanner's "stacking" in his post work, and he is being way too modest. Stacking is an old technique used by astronomers working with film. They would stack up successive films of a very dim star, and Bingo! it became a bright one. If you have a good tripod, a shutter release and a lot of time on your hands, you can take 30" night shots that are under exposed (digicams have sadly short exposure times) repeat the shot a few times and stack the images in an imaging program and suddenly you have a slightly weird looking, shadowless, daylight scene.

But Tanner did something much more advanced than that. He took a hand held pic with the spider in tight focus and its prey out of focus, then he took a second pic with the prey in focus. The two pics are then masked and married and there is the miracle pic!

Still not sure how you did this with two hand held the two shots, but I imagine that you gave yourself a margin for error between the two shots. Technically by far the best pic I have seen you do, Tanner. Congratulations!

Thanks Phil!

What do you mean by the bolded though?

Nice vid. I am looking at a Dean EVO special electric guitar. Once I pay off my student loans in a few months I'll probably purchase that or a camera, not quite sure yet though.
