I believe they are an endangered species and are protected over there in New Zealand. They are isolated on a few small islands. Illegal to own them, but I have been wrong before.

giant wetas are neither true crickets nor grasshoppers. giant wetas,are not offered in the legal pet trade, which, at the moment, is a good thing considering they are endangered.

if i am wrong please let me know, but giant wetas need to be on ice to live and can die from the heat from your hands. from what i have seen on t.v.

Thanks for the info. I am glad I am aware of them being endangered, in no way, shape or form will I ever try to buy something endangered!

They are really big Lobster looking things aren't they? lol
