At what instar do they get wingbuds?

I lost track of what instar my H. coronatus are and they have just molted and gotten tiny wingbuds.

Is there a specific instar when mantids get their first tiny wingbuds or does it vary from species to species?

They always have wingbuds. Right before they molt they swell up.

I guess they're too tiny to see.

NO WONDER!!! I was just wondering why my C. gemmatus had little wingbuds at L4. <_<
