What do you guys recommend as a good beginner's mantid. I'd prefer a larger one. I've considered these: Giant Malaysian Praying Mantis, Giant Indian Mantis, Giant Malaysian Shield Praying Mantis, Giant Asian Praying Mantis, Madagascan Marbled Praying Mantis . What do you guys think in YOUR PERSONAL experience? Thanks in advance!

An african species.

Good size, relatively easy to care for, eats most any insect.

I would look to buying a mantid that is big enough to tackle crickets rather than fruit flies for a first timer.

Also get more than one to start with. I would get two or three.

All the ones I've taken care of were pretty easy and all. I raised stamomantis californica since birth, one budwing since L1 or L2 (now L5 or L6 or L7), and two orchids since subsubadult.

All pretty good choices. The african mantis is an easy one that I like.

I started off with a bud wing mantis (Parasphendale sp), thier an average size mantis and have nice colours on them, or if your looking for more unusal mantids how about a Euchomenella sp or a dead leaf (Deroplatys sp) mantid? Both are smart looking and fairly easy to keep :)
