Hestiasula major (Giant Boxer Mantis) perform a very interesting ritual to lure a mate. When the male spots a potential partner he undulates his long thin abdomen from side to side as if to say "look how flexible I am", all the while vibrating his over sized claws. If receptive the female responds by flashing the brightly patterned underside of her raptorial claws acknowledging his advances.

"How insects convince each other not to kill one another."

Your videos are excellent as always. Did he successfully escape after mating?

Yes, the female was very receptive. I housed them together and he mounted a second time later that night. They've been living happily together since.

Very interesting. I love the music. That's great to hear they have been living happily together since...
I have them in a 12x12 net cage with lots of branches and vines. That's a lot of space for them. She's not an aggressive female but I have flies in there every day just in case. I'm anxious to see her lay a big green ooth! It's a cool species and all I have is this one pair so it's all up to them.

Im super excited to see PICTURES of that bright green ooth. Fabulous footage!

The video is awesome
Thanks!

As always, awesome footage ;) He connects so quickly, just like the G grisea males did...I wonder why?
He did connect relatively fast but the video isn't real time. I edit to keep things moving. I find that many small species connect really fast though.

So I'm sorry to say the male got chomped after a few days. It's too bad. Sometimes even relatively communal females will kill a male if he is bothering them too much and I think that was the case here. At least I can be sure he accomplished his life's mission. Poor little guy...

She did it! The ooth is bigger than she is!

Wow, incredible video. I always love how professional your videos are. I absolutely love this species, I need to own some some day.

Thanks! Hopefully this ooth and those that follow hatch out lots of babies so I can spread them around. As far as boxers go this has been the most interesting species so far.

You're welcome! I didn't catch that post, the ootheca, awesome. Bright green, that's wicked cool. Hopefully I'll have money to spare by then. How much would you ask for 2-4 nymphs? Oh for sure, they seem very interesting, previously I didn't realize that they communicate like that, the male and female. I knew they waved their arms and had beautiful designs on them but I find it amazing that they actually make those certain movements to communicate, and show off to each other.

I didn't realize it either until I watch the first mating. When I saw the male do his thing my jaw dropped. Pricing will depend on how many nymphs I get. She's eating a giant super worm right now so hopefully her nymphs are strong and plentiful.

Its crazy, I love it. I don't know of any other species that communicates like that. It's very impressive! Haha, nice. :) I'm sure they will be!
