It was a breeding weekend for me... and I must have said I have been lucky with my males too many times.. because I lost both of my males this time... I hated to see it... but I stayed up until 2 watching them.. and could not wait any longer.. the morning 1 was gone.. 1 was headless... I am kind of lost what to do now... he is still connected to her.

They have been connected since I woke up.. do I remove him? or is she saving him for a snack later?

I do not know if he will dry up and get released from her???

any suggestions?

Here are some pics..

It has been over 5 hours now... I don't know how long her has been headless? any ideas?

Leave him there! If you pull him off, he will have died for nothing! He is still mating and needs to finish. Her ooth will be fertile. Pull him off, it wont be.

Chances are she was fertilized in the first couple of hours, but I would leave what is left of him for now and see if he disconnects naturally in the next 24 hours or so rather than getting heavy handed and trying to pull them apart. If she doesn't end up munching the rest of his body on her own, I would offer what is left to him to one of your other hungry girls. This is of course assuming you don't have other females that need to be mated. In that case you can always roll the dice and see if what is left can manage a second go.

Well she finished him off... I guess he filled her up both ways... but it was a rough sight this morning... he was a big male... maybe she felt overanxious... with his size... I will start breeding a lot earlier in the day.

Lesson learned...

Wow..this is brutal...Its sad to see this part of it but it happens. At least he will carry on thru his nymphs..Sorry for your loss but congrats on the next generation..

And you called me a wuss for not wanting to put my male double shield in with the female. That's exactly what I was afraid of ; (

LOL... Well I have to say... I was not that bold...if I was, I apologize. I have been fortunate with my other males... Knock on wood! It was hard to see, but I know I will have more on the way.... Hopefully... I know she was definitely fertilized well... males do not last as long as the females do naturally, so hopefully I will have the patter of baby feet in a bit...

Glad to read it resolved itself. Sorry for you loss, but hopefully he got the job done and your be covered in nymphs soon.
