Wasn't sure if this belongs in photos or food and feeding. But i thought it was kinda neat.

I saw some mantids eating goldfish and wondered if my budwing would do the same thing. She molted a couple of days ago and figured she was probably hungry so I tried and sure enough she went for it. I had to coax the goldfish a little though.

This topic (mantids consuming goldfish) isn't new to the board, I recommend using the search function if you're curious to learn more. But if my memory serves, the act of an invertebrate consuming a vertebrate is/was controversial for some.

Tread lightly with this, it would be unfortunate to reopen old wounds.

I love it!!! did she eat the whole thing? is she subadult now???
She is L-6. By the way how many molts before subadult?

For the first time she did not clean her plate. She ate a little more than half then tossed the rest aside. She has a pretty good arm too. She tossed it about three inches.

Yes, I for one get angry and upset at unnecessary animal cruelty for fun like this.

yeah i find it a little much myself. i know it was a feeder goldfish but still.

Just did a search and did not realize this was such a delicate topic. I wont get into a debate because I feel that it was all said before. Admin can delete if they want.

What's the big deal? It's a FEEDER FISH! Who gives a rate ###### what eats it? It's bred to be food for something. Tarantula and centipede keepers feed pinkies all the time. Why not vertebrates for mantids? I GUARANTEE you that a big mantis eats anything it can catch, vertebrate or not.

That post had 0 useful info in it. Live prey isn't illegal in the USA. Feeder fish aren't going to "over calcify" their exoskeleton with just a random feeding, and I have t seen anyone post a scientific paper proving its even possible. I don't believe or listen to heresy. I have fed hundreds of mice to snakes, monitors, tiger salamanders and tarantulas over the years, I don't feel bad for them or feeder fish.

yeah i dont fell bad either. i just think that it was wasteful because there was no way the mantis was going to eat the whole fish.
