I was recently asked if I had any trio's available?

I bred birds for years... and if you were able to purchase trio's... you would try and get 2 females and a male..

Here what would the preference be?

2 females - 1 male?

2 males - 1 female?

I was just wondering.. your male loses a head?... but then again ... 2 females... more ooths??

Please share insight...

2 males one female. Females are more important to the original owners and if you send two males, if one dies then you still have one more for a breeding opportunity. Usually people can not spare 2 females

If I was looking to buy a trio I would be looking for two females to one male. Often when I am sexing handful of nymphs to keep out of a batch I shoot for that ratio. Admittedly, I view my mantises mostly as pets to begin with so breeding isn't that big of a concern for me. When I do pair mantises special care is always done to greatly reduce risk to my boy, not because I'm worried about making sure the eggs are fertilized but because I don't want to loose my boys if I can help it. I get way too attached.

2 males one female.

double the ooths and worse case, one female fertilized and one to trade or sell...or just enjoy by feeding a bit less so she last longer and just feed the heck out of the fertilized girl so she gets FAT and lays chubby ooths!!! ☺
