There are some species that belong to the Order Phasmatodea and are native to California. However, they do not look like the typical "walkingstick". They are the timema and are found in the Sierra foothills/forests. They are of interest to me and whenever I go to the foothills, I always search for them but with no luck (they are hard to find). I've only seen one specimen (in alcohol) so far and that was when one of my colleagues caught one for his insect collection in our entomology class. He is one lucky dude. If I was the person who caught it, I would have kept it alive to study it and propagate it because I love natives
. Do a google search on them if you want to learn about them.
