Do any phasmids live in CA, if there are some can u tell me which part of CA and how common or rare they are. This might be the wrong place to put this but... Do you know where I can buy some, on the web or at a store is fine.

There are some species that belong to the Order Phasmatodea and are native to California. However, they do not look like the typical "walkingstick". They are the timema and are found in the Sierra foothills/forests. They are of interest to me and whenever I go to the foothills, I always search for them but with no luck (they are hard to find). I've only seen one specimen (in alcohol) so far and that was when one of my colleagues caught one for his insect collection in our entomology class. He is one lucky dude. If I was the person who caught it, I would have kept it alive to study it and propagate it because I love natives :D . Do a google search on them if you want to learn about them.

What they eat depends on the species. I've read that some eat pine needles (yellow or lodgepole pine I'm presuming) and others eat ceanothus. But who knows, maybe they are capable of eating more than just that. How I've put it, they eat the leaves of what ever shrub/tree they are found on. The information I've provided is based on what I've read so far and until I find a specimen, I won't be able to learn more than what I know. I have not checked to see if anyone has them for sale but I'm guessing they are not (it's like someone trying to sell earwigs I think). Hmmm... you live in the foothills or Sierra forest? Cool.

I found these in my house today. I don't think my Dad will let me sell them, though.
