Hello guys n gals, I received an ooth today and it is cracked/broken near the top part where it is attached to a stick.  So what I'm wondering is can this still hatch or will they have likely dried out already? I don't know how deep the crack is or if it just happened during transit but yeah.. is there any chance?

If it is cracked to the point where you can see the eggs, those eggs are not going to hatch. If it's a thin crack I'm not so sure. Would you mind sending pictures and letting us know what species it is? That would help a ton.

View attachment 9633Hey Connor, I tried to get a good shot of it. Oh and it is an Idolomantis diabolica ootheca.

Hmmm.. I don't know if that will affect the eggs or not. Not an expert on ooths... I'd say most of the eggs should be fine. Seems like a big ooth though! I know I'd tried to steer you away from this species but they are definitely rewarding when you raise them up. Are you going to sell the extras(just wondering for the future)? Anyways good luck and keep us posted!

Well I don't want to count my mantids before they've hatched! Although, if I succeed at raising them I should have some extra.

That's a good question.  I don't know, I been getting a temperature though... I think I might be developing the dreaded mantid fever

But seriously, I hear they have 25-80 ish per ooth. So probably that many.

Geez I hope you know what you're getting into lol. These guys grow massive. And they eat... A lot. And you need like desert heat for them to survive and thrive. Hope they hatch well!

Nothing looks wrong with the ooth in the picture. That is how Idolomantis ooths look.

You are perfectly fine, no worries. I think all ooths are like this actually.

I was starting to worry that they weren't warm enough so I cranked the heat up a bit in the room they are in yesterday. Also started wondering if they were dry so I gave the ooth a heavy misting.

When I checked on them today I noticed something unusual... here's a few shots I took. Apologies if they're blurry, as I was a bit trembly with excitement, heh.
