I heard from someone that I could hand train my mantids. Nothing special just to get them to eat from and hang out on my hand or shoulder. I have had them climbing around on me but they seem to like to explore. Is there any way to do this or am I foolish for thinking I can train a mantid?

They can't be trained. But individual mantids have different personalitys. Mantids will generally sit on you and eat from your hand as they don't see you as someone more like a climbing frame. :)

I handle my mantises all the time, and can get them to do such things as crawl and fly to me, but I'm not sure the word train is quite the right way to put it. More like using the mantises natural tendencies to my advantage. If you feed your mantis on your hand, that is one great way to keep them still for a bit. Some species and individual mantises are also naturally more still than others. I have one Texas Unicorn that I could stick on my hand and five hours later he would still be perched their staring at me. My other Texas Unicorn, in about five minutes time, will climb from one end of my room to the other if left to his own devices. He also is an avid people chaser.

Hmm, yeah, I don't know about "training" them. You can probably condition them though. I guess training and conditioning is related.

If we hold up our Hierodula Membranacea male in front of our face and blow slowly, he jumps on our nose :D it's just something he does... not something we trained him! but it's fun :)

noticing the difference in they're personality makes them almost equal like little babies :)

There was some story that the Chinese used tiny collars to attach praying mantids to their bed post or their shoulder. They were supposed to protect them from demons.

If you want your mantis to behave as if it were a dog, you're out of luck. Unless you can make some kind of collar to stuff them in...

LOL

Really tempted to try that now haha.

I tried tying a leash to my mantis a long time ago and she got really angry at me. She got all tangled up and then chewed the thread to get free.
